James was born about 1759 the son of James Chater and Philadelphia (Sharp) Chater. His date of birth is based on his age at death.
In 1780 he might have been trading as a grocer from 152 Leadenhall Street, London.[1]
James married Elizabeth Groves on the 11th January 1781 at Saint Peter Cornhill, London, England.[2]
James was listed in the 1786 London Directory as: Chater James, Grocer 174 Fenchurch Street.[3]
James was listed in the 1791 The Universal British Directory (Part 2) : Exeter-Nobility Livery of London as: Chater James 174 Fenchurch Street (Livery Company) Vintners, (profession) Grocer.[4]
James' brother Nathaniel Chater died in 1821 and the Will of Nathaniel Chater was proved in 1822, bequeathing £100 to each of the brothers and £200 to their sister Philadelphia Chater.
James died aged 71 in 1830 and he was buried on the 2nd March 1830 at the non-conformist burial ground at Bunhill Fields, Islington, Middlesex. He was recorded as being 71 years old and as having been brought from King Street, Cheapside.[5]
James was born into a non-conformist family and his uncle John Chater was one of the founders of the London congregation of the Sandemanian Church, but other family members were also members.
However, James may have been a member of the Coverley Fields Independent Church, Mile End, Stepney, where many of his children were baptised, such as:
George Chater (abt.1784 - abt.1791)
Elizabeth (Chater) Wilson (11.1.1790 - 16.5.1852)
Emily Thebault Chater (26.9.1791 - abt.1858)
Ann Chater (29.7.1793 - abt.1856)
Charlotte Chater (30.11.1795 - abt.1847)
Maria Chater (6.11.1797 - 23.1.1881)
His other children were:
Emily Chater (before 29.8.1782 - )
John Chater (1.2.1728 - )
James' children's births were also registered at Dr. Williams' Library, a non-conformist register where their place of birth was recorded as being at Fenchurch Street. This matches with his address of 174 Fenchurch Street in the 1791 Universal British Directory where he is listed as Chater James, 174 Fenchurch Street, member of Vinters Livery Company, employed as a grocer.[6]
He therefore does seem to have operated from 2 addresses.
The history of the Chater Family and the Sandemanian Church has some of this history.
