Donley County is located in the eastern Panhandle of Texas just east of the Llano Estacado. Established in 1876 and later organized in 1882 from land given by the Bexar District. It is named for Stockton P Donley, justice of the state supreme court. The first group of settlers, Methodists from the New York area, were sponsored and led by Lewis Henry Carhart. Its county seat is Clarendon.
