Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Job Carter was a Virginia colonist.

He was the son of Edward Carter and Elizabeth (Thornton) Christian. 1700 in Lancaster, Virginia

Job was married to an Unknown woman prior to his marriage to Millicent Veale, whom he married ~1735. Peter Carter, who was born ~1730, is likely the result of Job's first marriage.

Van Stilley's research indicates that Job and Millicent had a daughter, Elizabeth.

Job died in 1753 in Fairfax, Virginia

Carter-21443 and Carter-20049 do not represent the same person because: They are different people. The Carter family has always used the same names over and over again, making it very confusing fir members of the family as well as genealogists.

It is very confusing with the same names being used over and over! My connection is through Martin Dawson, who was married to Elizabeth Carter, "daughter of Job Carter", and THEY use the same names over and over again.

Do you know if there is evidence that Job Carter (1700-1753) died in 1753? There aren't any sources attached to the profile, other than Geni and FamilySearch, which also don't have any sources attached. It's an interesting comment that he and his wife Millicent had a daughter named Elizabeth.

Their is a transcription of the family Bible, which lists a Job Carter (1743-abt.1782) born to Peter B Carter (1706-1789) and Judith (Norris) Carter (1706-1765). See http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/lancaster/bibles/carter1.txt.

Note the paragraph that reads: Peter Carter in the year 1788 & in ye year my Life 82. 58 years last May Day [May 1, 1730] I was Married to Judith Norris who passed on ye 15h day May 1765. We was Blest with 9 sons and 4 daughters viz. Dale & Thomas on ye 24h April 1731. Judy on ye 2d Novm 1732. Job on ye 1st Jan’y 1734. Joseph on ye 4th September 1736. Arabella Catharine on ye 17th August 1738. Solomon on ye 25 Septr. 1739. Frances Ball on ye 8h Jan’y 1741. Peter on ye 9th March 1743. Sarah on ye 16h June 1744. Daniel on ye 22d Dec. 1746 ye same Day and year as Danl son of my cozen Robert Carter. Norris on 8h November 1748 and George on 15 March 1757. of which Thomas, Joseph Peter, Norris, George, Frances and Sarah are now living. George with me Peter in Amherst and the others on Clinch.

is followed a few paragraphs later with: "Job Carter past to his Reward the 8h Novem 1782."

Because of the notes made in the Bible and their apparent physical closeness to each other, I can see the assumption that the Job Carter who died in 1782 is the same Job Carter who was born in 1734. But I think this is where the misunderstanding has happened. The will of Job Carter who died in 1782 reads: "My beloved wife, my son Peter Carter, my son Job Carter, my son Dale Carter, my daughter Elizabeth Dawson, my daughter Nancy Vaughan, my son William Carter". Based on the births of those children, it would be impossible for his birth to have been 1734. It would have been more likely that he was born in the first decade of 1700.

Your thoughts?

Carter-21443 and Carter-20049 appear to represent the same person because: The Job Carter who died in 1782 left a will that listed his children. But, based on the births of those children, a birth date of 1743 would have been impossible.

The remaining profile should have a birth date of 1700 and a death date of 1782, and parents Edward Carter (1671-1743) and Elizabeth (Thornton) Christian (1672-abt.1743). The wife named Anne (no evidence she existed) should be merged with Susanna Millicent (Veale) Carter (1713-1749) as the mother of the children.

Peter B Carter (1706-1789) named his children very similarly to Job's children - they would have been first cousins and close in age.

Please review this carefully to see if you agree with my theory.

I posted this comment on Job Carter (1743-abt.1782):

"The children of Job Carter are known by his will. Those children married, so we can estimate their birth dates. But those birth dates mean that their father, Job Carter, could not have been born in 1743 as he would be much too young to be a father in 1746 when his first child was born. So, either he is not a son of Peter Carter or the birthdate given in the Prayer Book is incorrect."

Based on his will, I've connected another child of Job's - daughter Elizabeth, who was married to Martin Dawson. That would indeed make a birthdate of 1743 for Job incorrect. Based on the names of his children, there must have been some kind of tie to Peter Carter. But, Peter's father's (Thomas) will in 1733 clearly lists his children, and Job is not one of them.

Could this Job Carter (1700-1753) actually be a duplicate of this one? I don't see any evidence he died in 1753. I'm going to suggest a merge to see if anyone agrees.

Hi JJ,

This Job Carter is a different guy who is a cousin of your Job Carter. It would be easier for me (and his ancestors) if they were the same because your Job has more info available! :) There are several documented court cases in which Job was a key player.

Thanks for the message and the attention you are giving to the descendants of Thomas Carter of Lancaster!
