Biography

I grew up within 50 miles of the places where many of my ancestors for many generations had lived and died. So I knew not only my own aunts, uncles, and first cousins (32 of them), but knew great-aunts, great-uncles, and many other more distant relatives. I loved to hear my mother tell family stories and by the time I was 7 or 8 years old, I understood how I was related to these people.

When I was a teen-ager, my Aunt Mary Lou showed me how to systematically search old records for information and how to document and organize what I found. In those days it was a pencil and paper endeavor made a little easier by using pre-printed forms. I drew many family trees by hand.

After I married, my husband shared my interest and we had his side of the family to search for, too. As time passed we visited archives and libraries, cranking through microfilms one imge at a time. We had the opportunity to travel to the countries where our ancestors had come from, and sit in church offices, paging through the old record books.

Personal computers made typing and organizing easier. Then the internet arrived and gave us access to the world! Now WikiTree makes it possible to contribute to a world-wide family tree of accurate, well-sourced information. We’ve come a long way.
