George Buxton Bowers was born in June 1884 at or about Albert Park in the Colony of Victoria. He was the son of Walter Edmund and Alice Bowers (nee Thistlewaite).
George Buxton Bower was an Australian Rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL), up until World War I.
Private George Buxton Bower enlisted in the A.I.F. on the 17th of July 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on 23 November 1915. While serving in England he was invited to play for the Australian Training Units team in the famous "Pioneer Exhibition Game" of Australian Rules football, held in London, in October 1916. A news film was taken at the match and can be seen on YouTube. His side was defeated by the combined Third Australian Divisional Team.
He passed away in February 1964 in Victoria Australia and was laid to rest in the Brighton General Cemetery, Caulfield South, Victoria, Australia.
