Biography

Charles "Charlie" was born about 1846. He was the son of Wesley Adams and Mary Dowdell. He passed away on 4 Sep 1876.

Charles is listed as being age 24 on the 1870 Census (21 Jul 1870) and lives with his mother, Mary (32?), and siblings John (19), Robert Norman (16), Lizzie (8) and Frank (6). There is another brother, Thomas, who is 2, and a domestic servant, Joe Brown (16), from Maryland. Charles' occupation is listed as a Gauger (gauged quantities of alcohol so that the correct amount of duty could be levied);

Married Mary A. Elizabeth Hess (11 Sep 1851 - 13 Jul 1937) in Louisville, Kentucky on 8 Nov 1870, in Louisville, Kentucky;

Had a daughter, Lillian (Lillie) Adams Strohmenger Baker (31 Oct 1872 - 6 Nov 1945). In 1910, she managed a dining hall where her brother was a cashier; died of injuries sustained in a car accident in Waynesboro, Tenn; lived with husband, Milton Baker, at 3644 River Park Drive, Louisville; buried in Eastern Cemetery;

Had a son, Joseph Wesley Adams (1 Jan 1874 - 19 Jan 1941), who worked as a ticket agent and later died of a coronary occlusion at Central State Hospital, where he worked as a clerk; buried at Eastern Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky;

Charles died on 4 Sep 1876, at age 30 of gangrene; buried in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky; PLOT: Section M Lot 337;


Obituary: DIED: ADAMS -- On Monday, September 4 at 2 o'clock p.m., C. R.(K.) Adams, of general dropsy, in his 30th year. The funeral will take place from his mother's residence, 604 Grayson St., between Nineteenth and Twentieth, at ? o'clock to-day. Mary Hess Adams remarried a James Renrick Cheney (1843–1932) in 1879. The 1880 Census shows Mary (28) and James (40) living on Magazine Street with three children: Lilly Adams (8), Joseph Adams (6) and Minnie Cheney (1 mo.);

Mary Hess Adams Cheney is buried in Eastern Cemetery. She lived at 3715 River Park Drive at the time of her death;
