My furthest Jackson is William Alexander Jackson. B. 1786 in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1820 he travelled to Australia onboard the HEBE, a convict ship. He was pardoned and married Caroline Turner in 1825 at Parramatta, NSW Australia.

He had a son James Jackson on 28/08/1828 in Sydsney, NSW.

William died in Gundaroo, NSW in Sept 1832.

His son, James Jackson married Mary Ann Todd in 1860 in Victoria Australia.

His son was born William James Jackson 04/09/1861 in Echuca, VIC Australia. He married Harriet Peat in May 1884 in Sydney, NSW Australia.

They had a son Edward James Jackson on 06/08/1892. He married Edith Ellen Pilkington in 1912 in Newtown NSW.

They had 1 child, Edith Gladys Jackson, 05/11/1913. Edward deserted the family and Edith (Nana) was raised by her mother alone in Sydney.

Edith married Oscar Frederick Hough in 1935, and had 2 sons. Denis Hough, born 10/03/1945 in Balmain, NSW is my father.

Very cool that you can trace the line back to Scotland. I traced my maternal Jackson line from the USA back to Ulster Province in Ireland just a couple of years ago. I cannot push back farther than William Jackson born around 1770. But amazingly I have good DNA matches to living descendants of his through three different children. And I have hope that I can one day track down a descendant of the fourth child who reproduced and convince him/her to test. I am also encouraging my second cousin, a male Jackson, to test his Y-chromosome.

Have you gotten into genetic genealogy?

I have a second Jackson line on my paternal side. Lots of Jacksons in this world! (But still easier to research than Smiths!)

Cayley, could you put a link to your earliest Jackson as an answer to this email?  We hope to link up the earliest known Jackson in each branch via the category:Jackson Brick Walls.

Dear Cayley,

I came across your post by chance yesterday. I was not aware of the children of James JACKSON and Mary Ann TODD. Very interesting. We must be distantly related.

William Alexander JACKSON (1785–1837), a Scottish convict from  Edinburgh per Hebe and his English convict wife, Caroline TURNER (c. 1799–1895), ran hotels at Liverpool, Goulburn and Gundaroo NSW. It was allegedly at Gundaroo that William JACKSON was murdered in 1837.

William and Caroline had two more children apart from James:

1. William Alexander JACKSON (1825–1893), born at Parramatta, New South Wales on 5 July 1825 as William TURNER (NSW BDM Births 374/1825 V1825374 12). He married one of my grandmother's younger sisters, Catherine JOHNSTON (c. 1837–1902) at Albury, New South Wales on 24 November 1854. William JACKSON died at Bankstown, New South Wales on 8 October 1893. William and Catherine had two sons:

1.1 William Francis JACKSON (1855–1923)

1.2 Frederick James or James Frederick JACKSON (1857–1923)

2. Esther or Hester JACKSON (1827–1857). Esther married at Goulburn, NSW on 26 October 1846:

 1. Dr George YARNOLD (1811–1850)

and

2. Thomas Marcus WORTHINGTON at Christ Church St Lawrence, Sydney, NSW on 29 July 1852. Thomas and Esther had a son, William HRM WORTHINGTON (1856–1857)

Caroline Turner JACKSON married twice more after William JACKSON's death in 1837:

1. David Winter DUNCOMBE (1784–1848), married at St. Saviour, Goulburn, NSW on 11 March 1846

and

2. Alfred Charles MARTIN (married in 1849 at All Saints Church, Camden, NSW). Alfred Martin apparently left the family c. 1851?. Still trying to find out what happened to him.

If you are interested in corresponding by email, I have a lot more info on the JACKSONs to share. I can let you know the best email address to contact me on if you are interested.

Best wishes, Jane Morrison
