I did note the macron, and I have worked hard to use it when discussing Māori cousins, or the cousins of friends. (I grew up with it being Maori, so it's been tough to change the habit of a lifetime, but I am a believer that "old dogs" CAN be taught new tricks!)
When I was a child, my Aunty Gwendo sent me a Māori doll. She was wearing a korowai - the kahu huruhuru (? if I have that correct), and was about 6 inches tall. I thought she was wonderful, and took her to school for show and tell. Sadly, one of the boys poked her eyes back into her head, and she was never the same again. Aunty Gwendo also sent over some rulers made of different woods from the trees found in New Zealand. I thought they were pretty wonderful, too. Gwendo's grandson was born in NZ, and my maternal line has a slew of rellies who went there, or were born there. Always planned to go, but never made it.
It should be a Macaroon-a-Thong.
We could designate the regions as "pistachio macaroon", "sunshine macaroon" (lemon&orange), "strawberry macaroon", and see who "eats" the most.
(Hey, don't blame me for the pain talking. It's been bad enough I've not slept a whole lot in one stretch for days. An hour here, two hours there. But it'll pass and I'll be sane again -- more's the pity. Some of my best, or most ridiculous, ideas come from times like this. )
