If you have Plantagenets in your ancestry (as I believe you state in your profile that you do), then you should be able to trace your ancestry back to Eahlmund of Kent (or at a minimum to Ecgbehrt of Wessex, who was said by late-9th century sources to be son of an Eahlmund, though it is not entirely clear that it was the Eahlmund who was king of Kent). The reputed ancestry of Eahlmund is open to quite a few doubts and becomes more and more fictitious the further back you go (though that hasn't kept Wikitree from incorporating it). For a detailed and comprehensive discussion, see https://fasg.org/projects/henryproject/data/ealhm000.htm

Is this an impersonal 'you' as in 'one' (How far back... can one trace one's...?)?

If so, I think the answer may be to about the first century, as WikiTree doesn't take profiles before that.

If it's a direct 'you', my answer is to about the fifteenth century so far.

My family to Henry Lellow born about 1560, died 18 Jan 1629. Bet. 1606–1611 in Constantinople,; Lello went to Constantinople as an attache to the English Embassy to the Sublime Porte of the Ottoman Empire and in 1598 was appointed ambassador.

My husband's family to Thomas Throckmorton born about 1533 in Warwickshire.

Neither of them are entered on WT tree yet. I would like to find some more sources, before I create profiles for them.
