Biography

Jan Pierre Zielhof aka Celio, Zeloff / Zeluff was born about 1688 in Bushwick, Kings Co., NY. Jan Pierre Zielhof / Zeluff baptism was 28 Sept 1688 Kingston, New York according to Bergen's Early Settlers of Kings Co, New York[1] Baptism also noted as Jan 28 Sep 1688, son of Peter Usiel and Kornelia Damen, Wits. Jan Damen and Fytie Mertens. [2]

Jan aka Peter Van Zielle passed away after 1759 as per estate documents.[3]

From the publication: "Staten Island and It's People, A History 1609-1929", by Charles W. Leng, B. Sc. and William T. Davis, Vol. II, Lewis Publishing Company, Inc., New York, 1930, pg. 977, "Peter Siclof (or Zeluff), a member of the North Company of Militia in 1715, appears to be the first of his family on Staten Island. Zeluff Avenue, Mariners' Harbor, is named for this family." In descendant Rebecca Weston's research she notes that in 1718 Pieter "Zielhof" was still a resident of Staten Island. Could Pieter's father (also named Pieter Uziele) really have been the "first" on Staten Island for whom Zeluff Avenue was named?

This compiler Hoffman-3554 feels that somewhere between 1719 and 1722 Peter and his family moved off Staten Island to the mainland to nearby Elizabethtown, Essex County, New Jersey, but continued to have their children baptized at the Port Richmond Dutch Reformed Church on Staten Island. A Peter "Siclof" is named in the will of his son-in-law Edgecomb Clayter in 1759, leading one to presume that he was still alive by then. [4]

Research Notes

From descendant Ken Zeliff's research: David and Marie Uzille, Flemish Huguenots arrived at New Amsterdam in late June 1660, along with their infant son, Peter. Peter marries Cornelia Damen and they have several children. The eldest, Jan, is baptized in the Brooklyn Dutch Reformed Church. Jan appears to have adopted the name Peter, lives on Staten Island, marries Blandina Van Pelt. Their children are baptized at the Staten Island Dutch Reformed Church. In 1715, Jan/Peter along with his father in law, Peter Van Pelt, register for the Staten Island Militia. Jan/Peters name is entered as Peter Cielo. This is a phonetic spelling and differs markedly from his Flemish name. It appears nowhere else in existing documents. It is possible that Jan/Peter could not spell his Flemish name because he was illiterate at this time. By 1754, their son, Daniel marries Hannah Clark the name appears as Zeluff, a modern spelling of this line of the ancient Flemish name. Other lines of this family also begin to modernize the name and these spellings include Zeliff, Seely and Ziele.
