No birth or baptism record has been found for Philip Zehrung, but he is believed to have been born about 1747[1] Pfuhl, Nassau-Oranien, Heiliges Römisches Reich, the son of John Zehrung and Anna Marie Uhr.

Philip is believed to have emigrated with his family in 1753. Johannes Zehrung with a family of 6 is recorded as emigrating from their home in Pfuhl, Nassau-Oranien, Heiliges Römisches Reich.[2] Johannes and the family landed at Philadelphia on 29 Sep 1753 aboard the ship Rowand, out of Rotterdam.[3]

Philip married Anna Catherine Zeller. Catherine's maiden name is established by mention in her father John Zeller's will, "...Catherine, wife of Philip Zehrung...".[4] Among their children were Johann Henrich and Catherine, who married William Caldwell.

On 26 May 1772, father Johannes sold his land on Middle Creek of what was then Cumberland County to John Rush, but died without transferring title. The land was conveyed to John Rush on 3 Oct 1774 by deed.[5] Of note, the deed lists Johannes' heirs, sons Henry, Ludwig, Mathias, Philip, Christian, Ludwig Shuey, on behalf of John Zerung (minor) and daughter Elizabeth, wife of Leonard Kerstetter.

In 1782, Philip was recorded as a militiaman of the 5th class in the 8th Company of the 2nd Battalion of the Lancaster County (PA) Militia.[6]

It is unknown exactly when and where Philip died. However, he died sometime between 14 Mar 1812 at which time he conveyed property to his son Henry (as noted in Henry's will[7]), and 29 Sep 1813 when the Court of Jefferson County ordered Philip's estate to be sold[8]. Based on the latter source, it is likely Philip died in Jefferson County. It isn't know where he was buried, but it is possible he was buried in the Shake-Zaring family cemetery in eastern Jefferson County. However, no headstone for Philip has been found and all of the identifiable graves were moved in 1999 to Harrods Creek Cemetery, Brownsboro, Oldham, Kentucky to make way for a housing subdivision.[9]

Research Notes

Wilson Zahring's book on the Zehrung's in America[10] on pages 174-176 provides much information about Philip that needs to be verified, chased down to primary sources, and incorporated in this bio.

Need sources for marriage, wife's maiden name, and children, several more of which are listed on FamilySearch.

Hello. The Last Name At Birth of Philip and his sibs/father is Zehrung. See Zehrung-56 and family. Would you please put me on the Trusted List so I can fix this and coordinate a merge between our two Philips?

Zehrung-56 and Zehring-4 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife, given name, and variant surname. Zehrung is the last name at birth of Philip's family.
