Biography

Elsie was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire on 19 Dec 1897.[1][2] Her parents were Samuel Henry Wright and Katharine Janet Hunt.

Elsie was 13 at the time of the 1911 England Census, living at 89 Western Road, Brighton, Sussex, England, with her parents and six siblings.[3] Her father was a grocer, and the family lived in the house over the shop.

Elsie was engaged to marry Wilfred Horner according to the book 'Yeomen of the Fens'; 'Unfortunately, no record has survived of a holiday, when Samuel Henry took his daughter Elsie up the Thames for a week in a skiff, probably after the death of her fiancee Wilfred Horner in 1920.'[4], sadly Wilfred died in 1920[5] of Spanish Flu.[6]

Elsie went on to marry Sidney Gibbon on 28 Aug 1924 at the Friends Meeting House in Brighton. Her son's middle name was Wilfred, in memory of Wilfred Horner.[6] Elsie was a teacher of home economics.

Adoption of Jewish refugee Information given by Janet Schonbeck, daughter of Sidney and Elise, to her daughter Barbara Spring 2021. In the late 1930s Dr Goldsmith base in Newark ran a refugee support group an in 1939 Suzi Weiss came from Austria with her mother. Her father was a dentist; he committed suicide just before they left Austria. They stayed with Dr Goldsmith. In 1940 Suzi came to live with Sidney and Elsie; Suzie was 12 and Janet was 11, they were in the same class at school, they got on well. Suzi's mother stayed somewhere else. Presumably Janet's brother Alan was away at Ackworth School. Before Suzi was placed with Sidney and Elsie she had been placed with a single man; she was not happy there and left. She stayed with Sidney and Elsie for 9 months, leaving in September 1940, when Suzi and her mother went to the United States to stay with relatives. After the war Dr Goldsmith contacted the family in the United States and they told him that they had done a midnight flit and disappeared. We have no more information.
