Biography
Samuel was born 1798 in Pennsylvania to parents Thomas and Mary. He was a first generation American as both of his parents appear to have been born in Ireland and immigrated to the United States according to census information provided by Samuel.
He was married to Mary Clayton August 10th, 1837 in West Chester, Pennsylvania. The couple had at least 5 children; Joshua C, Narcissa, Edith Ann, Elwood Giest and Leander O.
On the Federal census of 1850 the family was living in Little Britain in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.[1] He was listed as a farmer.
In 1860 the family had remained where they were still working their own farm.[2] An interesting bit of information from the 1860 census is that the family listed directly above Samuels belongs to a man named William Giest, leading one to believe that this could possibly be where they got the middle name for their son Elwood.
The family still remained in Little Britain working as farmers in both 1870[3] and 1880.[4]
Samuel eventually passed away on May 7th, 1885 at 86 years old. He was laid to rest in the Eastland Friends Burial Ground in Little Britain.[5]

Research Notes
Samuel was originally entered as having been born in Ireland. All sources I've located stated he was born in Pennsylvania, I've thus changed his profile to state Pennsylvania as his birth location. The originally attached source Encyclopedia of Pennsylvania biography, does state him as having been born in Ireland but also states his birth year as 1781 which also appears to be incorrect according to census info and his tombstone.
