Biography

Albert Woodin, son of George Woodin and Agnes Smart, was born in the community of Pleasant Ridge, in Saint Patrick Parish, Charlotte County, British New Brunswick, in about 1848.[2] In 1851, Albert and three half-siblings, Jane, James and Mary, resided with Albert's parents in a "log house" in Pleasant Ridge.[3]

Albert and his parents emigrated to the United States through the port of entry at Calais, Maine, apparently in Sep 1854.[4] They settled in Bath, Sagadahoc County, Maine, on the Atlantic coast, about 170 miles southwest of Pleasant Ridge. As of 7 Jul 1860, Agnes and George and their son, Albert, resided in Bath, where George worked as a carpenter.[5]

By 1869, Albert relocated with his maternal uncle, William Smart, to Oshkosh, Winnebago County, Wisconsin, where he became a United States citizen, 2 Nov 1869.[6] Drawing them were two of Albert's other maternal uncles. His 44 year-old maternal uncle Nathan Smart had emigrated to Oshkosh by as early as 1847 and who, in 1870, resided in Oshkosh's Ward 3.[7] His 38 year-old maternal uncle Reuben Smart, who resided in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, about 30 miles east of Oshkosh, where he'd been since 1855.[8] As of 7 Jul 1870, Albert and his uncle William Smart resided in a boarding house in Oshkosh's Ward 5.[9] Oshkosh in 1870 was the third largest city in Wisconsin and had a population of 12,663, double what is was a decade before.[10]
