In 1870, the Wolfe family lived in San Francisco, California. The household included John Wolfe, 34, born in Connecticut, occupation “no business”, with personal assets of $1000; his wife, Mary, 33, born in Ireland; their children, all born in California, Elizabeth, 10, in school; Harriet, 6; and John, 3.[1]
There was once a cluster of five cemeteries in San Francisco. Beginning in 1901, the dead in all five cemeteries began to be moved to other cemeteries. Odd Fellows Cemetery, located between Geary and Turk streets, and Parker Ave. and Arguello Blvd. was originally deeded by Samuel Brannon to the first San Francisco Odd Fellows lodge, established in 1851. Beginning in 1933, the 26,000 dead there were moved to Greenlawn Memorial,Park, Colma, CA. Laurel Hill and Lone Mountain cemeteries were evacuated between 1901 and 1939. The gravestones from Masonic Cemetery were used as fill for the approaches of the Golden Gate Bridge. The fifth, Calvary Cemetery was physically connected to Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemeteries. Laurel Hill and Lone Mountain were nearby. The space was used for urban sprawl. The old Masonic Cemetery property is now the University of San Francisco.
