Nancy Gay Witter was the daughter of Glendale dairy farmer Howard Ray Witter and Hannah Merle Huff, born on 5 Mar 1925 in Glendale, Maricopa County, Arizona. She and her brother, Dick Jr., were playmates of a young Marty Robbins, whose family lived nearby during the early 1930s.[1][2][3]
Nancy married Robert T Callin on 28 Jun 1942 in Glendale, Maricopa County, Arizona. was born on 16 Dec 1920 in Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio. His family moved to Orlando before 1935, and Bob attended high school there. After two years of high school, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on 26 Jul 1941 at Camp Blanding, Florida, and was soon posted to serve as a mechanic at Luke Field, near Glendale, Arizona.[4][5][6][7][8][9]
Bob and Nancy bought a home on Gardenia Lane in Glendale, and once she finished her degree at Grand Canyon, both taught in the Glendale Union School District. Nancy’s mother, Merle Witter, spent her final years in their home. After they retired from teaching, Bob and Nancy eventually sold their Glendale home and lived in Sun City until Nancy's deteriorating health led them to move into a house two doors down from their daughter, Vicki, in Peoria, Maricopa County.[10][11][12]
Nancy died on 23 Dec 2004 at age 79 in Peoria and was buried in Resthaven Park West Cemetery in Glendale. Her obituary was published in The Arizona Republic on 28 Dec 2004.[13][14][15][16][17]
“Nancy G. (Witter) Callin, 79, of Glendale, Arizona, left us on December 23 to spend Christmas with her savior whose birth we celebrate at this time. She was born March 5, 1925, in a little house in Glendale, and raised in and around Glendale and Peoria, attending Peoria Elementary School #1 and Glendale High School. She married Private Robert Callin at Calvary Baptist Church in Glendale in June, 1942 while he was stationed at Luke Air Force Base. They had been married for 62 years. Nancy graduated from Grand Canyon College in 1961 and taught Art in the Glendale Elementary District. Nancy's passions were her family, art in all forms, gardening, and travel. She is predeceased by her parents, Howard (Dick) and Merle Witter of Glendale, and her brother and sister-in-law Dick and Irene Witter of Glendale. She is survived by her devoted husband, Bob Callin, who has taught us all the meaning of unconditional love and those vows, "Till death do us part." She is also survived by her daughter Vicki (Callin) Hunt of Peoria; son Ted Callin of Morristown; grandchildren, Jeff Vinck, Katie (Vinck) Thompson, Chad Vinck, Tad Callin and Sara (Callin) Hobbs, and nephew Pat Witter. Her great-grandchildren are Cambria, Seamus, Lars and Mileidy Callin; and Ryan, Macie and Reagan Thompson; and Caleb and Riley Hobbs. She is also survived by childhood and lifetime best friend, Bobbe (Harris) Goodman, as well as sons and daughters-in-laws, church friends, and those Kookie Kampers. A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, December 28 at 10 a.m. at Best Funeral Home at 9380 W. Peoria Avenue and all are invited. A luncheon will follow at Old Town Bed & Breakfast, 8276 W. Monroe St. in Peoria. Interment will be private.”
