James was born in 1865[1] in Middleton, Yorkshire, England. He was the son of Reuben Withell and Mary Railton.[2]
James's family emigrated to New Zealand aboard the vessel John Temperley which departed England on 13 March 1866 and arrived into Lyttelton on 21 June 1866. His father was listed on the passenger list as being aged 28, a "farm labourer", his mother, Mary (aged 28), and brothers Charles (aged 7), and Oliver (aged 2). James Railton (listed on the passenger list as "Railton" was recorded as being aged 6 months.
He married Elizabeth Geddes McLaughlan in 1898.[3]
James passed away in 1907, aged 42 and is buried at the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.[4]
