Joseph Williams was born in about 1855 in Bromborough, Cheshire. He was the son of John Williams.
Joseph's mother died in about 1860.
By April 7th 1861, the family were living in Lime Grove, Bromborough. Joseph's father was employed as a candle works labourer. There were five children, the youngest being a year old.
By April 2nd 1871, Joseph was boarding with his older brother John in Bromborough. John had a Scottish wife, Mary, and a baby daughter. John was working as a labourer, no occupation is listed for Joseph but at sixteen he would almost certainly have been expected to work unless he was ill.
Joseph married Elizabeth Williams on 25 Dec 1875 at St Peter's Church in Birkenhead, Cheshire. He was 22 years old. His father was named as John Williams, and hers as Thomas Williams.
Their daughter Jane was born in 1876 in St Helens, Lancashire. Her birth was registered in the last quarter of 1876, in Prescot district.
Their son Thomas was born in 1878 in St Helens, Lancashire. His birth was registered in the third quarter of 1878, in Prescot district.
Their son John was born in 1880 in Little Neston, Cheshire. His birth was registered in the third quarter of 1880, in Wirral district.
By April 3rd 1881, they were living in Little Neston. Joseph was employed as a coal miner. Besides the three children, their household included a lodger, Robert Roberts, who had been born in Little Dublin, Flintshire.
Their son Isaiah was (according to the 1891 census) born in about 1882 in Neston. His name/existence hasn't so far been confirmed by any other record, and the first letter of his name is unclear in the original - it looks like either Osiah or Isiah.
Their daughter Sarah was born in 1884 in Little Neston, Cheshire. Her birth was registered in the third quarter of 1884, in Wirral district.
Their son William was born in 1886 in Little Neston, Cheshire. His birth was registered in the last quarter of 1886, in Wirral district.
Their son Edward was born in 1888 in Little Neston, Cheshire. His birth was registered in the second quarter of 1886, in Wirral district.
By April 5th 1891, they were back in St Helens, living at 14 Wood Street, Parr, St Helens. Joseph was still working as a coal miner. Their two eldest children, Jane and Thomas, were not in the household.
Their daughter Martha was born in about 1892 in St Helens.
Their daughter Mary was born in about 1894 in St Helens.
By March 31st 1901, they were still in Parr, and Joseph was still a coal miner. Besides Joseph and Elizabeth, the household consisted of John (now 20, and a glass works labourer); William (now 14 and a glass works furnace labourer); Edward (12), Martha (9) and Mary (7).
By April 2nd 1911, they were still in St Helens, and Joseph was still a coal miner. Only one of their children remained in the household - William, who was now 24, and employed as a colliery dataller.
Joseph died in 1936 in St Helens, aged 81. He was buried on 22 Aug 1936 in St Helens Cemetery, in a family grave.
