Biography

Daniel Williams, of Providence, born February 1642, died May 14, 1712, married Rebecca Rhodes Power, widow of Nicholas Power in December7, 1676. She died in 1727. Their daughter, Mary Williams, who died after 1740, married Epenetus Olney, of Providence who was born January 18, 1675, died September 18, 1740. [1]

Epenetus Olney Sr., tavernkeeper at Providence, married March 9, 1666 Mary Whipple, born in 1648, daughter of John and Sarah Whipple. Their son Epenetus Jr. born January 8, 1675, married Mary Williams, daughter of Daniel and Rebecca Williams, and granddaughter of Roger Williams. [2] [3] [4]

Epenetus Olney, who died September 17, 1740, owned a large tract of land in what is known as Glocester and Burrillville. He and Mary had children: James, Charles, Joseph, Anthony, Mary, Amey, Anna, Martha, and Freeborn.[2]

Epenetus Olney House, North Providence, Erected between 1700-5; demolished 1898.

The lands and estate of by Epenetus Sr. was left to his son James in his will. However, James divided the Estate among his siblings. In May 1702, Thomas Olney surveyor, Rectefied & laid out a tract of land unto Epenetus Olney, at his farm, where he now dwelleth, lieing between the place called Wanskuck in Providence Townshipp & Woonasquatuckett river. It is assumed Epenetus Jr. was married by this date for he had established a home.

Three months later his brother James conveyed to him, by deed, the tract lieing and adjoining to the Woonasquatucket river laid out by Thomas Olney in May. In this deed it is written that my brother Epenetus Olney is now desirous to settle & be accommodated with some of his father's land to himself & hath already begun a settlement upon some part thereof by building & planting thereon. These deeds fix the time when this house was built for in May 1702; it was the place where he now dwelleth, and in August of the same year he had already begun a settlement. The house being built most likely in the fall of 1701 and his first spring planting was finished when the land became his by act and deed of his brother James. [6]
