Death

Elizabeth died on 28 Mar 1798 at Canterbury, Windham Co., Connecticut, the late widow of Josiah Butt, age 87.^[3] Note that the Hale Collection of Cemetery and Newspaper Notices provides the date of 12 April 1798^[4]; however, this appears to be the date the newspaper reported her obituary as described below.^[3]

Her obituary quoted in Adams Magazine, as taken from a Norwich newspaper on 12 April 1798, says “Died at Canterbury, Conn., March 28, 1798, Elizabeth Butts age 87, relict of Josiah Butts, late of Canterbury, deceased. This woman’s children were fourteen in number all of whom lived to be married and have children. At her death she left twelve children, eighty grandchildren, one hundred and three great grandchildren, and two of the fifth generation".^[3]
