Biography

Joseph was born in 1886 in Foxton, New Zealand. He was the son of William Henry Williams and Elizabeth Anne Bray. He was one of fourteen children.

His father died in 1902.

Joseph met Harriett Louisa "Lou" Barnett and they were married on 2 March 1907 at the Registrars Office in Palmerston North. Joseph's occupation was listed as "Flax Mill Hand" and his residential address was Longburn, Palmerston North. (Joseph's brother Symon had married Harriett's sister Isabella in 1902). The newly married couple settled in Union Street, Foxton just a few doors down from Isabella and Symon and they spent alot of time together.

They went on to have seven children.

In the 1911 NZ Electoral Rolls Joseph was recorded living in Union Street, Foxton, employed as a Labourer.

The family moved to manage a large farm at Pukeatua/Parawera in the Waikato.

In the 1928 NZ Electoral Rolls Joseph and Lou were recorded living at Parawera, near Te Awamutu. He was a Sharemilker.

Joseph left his wife some time after 1928 to bring up the children on her own, no doubt the sons had to take over alot of the farm duties.

By 1949 he was living at Awaiti Road, Paeroa in the Hauraki District, employed as a Sharemilker.

In the 1954 NZ Electoral Rolls Joseph was retired, living at 6 Regent Street, Waihi.

He married, secondly, Ida Temperton in about 1970.

He passed away in Waihi on 24 November 1976 at the age of 90 and was cremated on 25 November 1976 at Pyes Pa Cemetery, Tauranga, New Zealand[1].

Cause of death was recorded as Hypostatic Pneumonia (3-4 days), Congestive cardiac failure (6 months), Myocardial Ischaemia (many years) and Chronic obstructive airway disease (also for many years).
