Hezekiah Ponder Williams, best known as "Ponder" was a lifelong resident of Red Bluff. His homeplace was located about two miles from his parent's home, at lot 194,7th district of Clinch County, which was cut into Atkinson County in 1918.

"When the Civil War begin in April 1861, the Georgia militia was reactivated, and on July 6, 1861, Ponder Williams was elected and commissioned ensign in the Clinch County militia, in the 1061st militia district"

On April 20, 1862, Williams volunteered as a private in Co. "K", 26th Georgia Infantry Regiment, and served until the close of the war. He was however, shown on company rolls on November 5, 1864, as being "sick and absent". He was allowed to return home to the Red Bluff community and was never able to rejoin his command.
