Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Roger Williams was a Virginia colonist.

Roger Williams of Rappahannock County, Virginia. He first appears in Rappahannock County in 1664, when he bought 200 acres on Totosky Creek and is styled "Roger Williams planter."[citation needed]

On February 3, 1671/2, he, together with his wife Joan, gave a quitclaim deed to Richard Dudley.

On November 2, 1677 Samuel Wills of Farnham parish, Rappahannock in contemplation of marriage with Joan, relict of Roger Williams, gave over certain property to Roger, son of the deceased Roger Williams, to his brother Sydrach and to his sisters, Susanna and Anne. The children were to have it when they attained the age of 16 years. There was also another sister named Rebecca. [1]

Roger Williams of Northern Neck, VA is an ancestor of the Simpson-Kincheloe-Canterbury family of Caswell Co., NC, previously of Northern Neck, VA. His wife probably was Joan (or Jane) (surname not proved). His conjectured daughter is Ruth Williams, wife of John Canterbury, as implied in documents other than his will. Lewis Loyd was her stepfather, and he left a will. [This is from an unsubstantiated source, and, again the maiden name of Joane cannot be proved by this writer.]

Marriage & Children

Williams, Roger (1645-77) VA; m. Joane Frith. Landowner. [2] [3]

Marriage: Roger married a Joane Jean Firth/Frith(Essex county Virginia Marriages 1655-1900 Book D6 Pg 35) and upon his death she married a Samuel Wills)

From the wills cited under Death & Legacy below, the children of Roger and Joan Williams were as follows:

  1. Roger Williams, mentioned in his father's will, but apparently died young;
  2. Betty Williams, called eldest daughter in her father's will, married either a Thornhill or George Thompson;
  3. Ann Williams, b. 1667, m. (1) Henry Thornton and (2) James Debord;
  4. Susannah Williams m. William Phillips, and had daughters Ann, Elizabeth and Susan mentioned in the wills;
  5. Ruth Williams m. John Canterbury;
  6. Shadrack Williams, b. Feb. 1, 1673/4 (Northfarnham P.R.), m. Elizabeth Walker, daughter of Thomas Walker (see article on the Ashbury Family);
  7. Rebecca Williams, b. June 20, 1675 (Northfarnham P.R.), m. either a Thornhill or George Thompson. [4]

Death & Legacy

Will of Roger Williams, 26 Feb 1675; proved 6 Jun 1677, [Old] Rappahannock Co.:

"To my two sons Roger Williams and Shadrack Williams I doe give 225 acres of land apiece which is 450 acres between them. To wife Joane Williams I doe give the Plantation with 200 acres of land at the Plantation I say wherein she is at this present living. To eldest daughter Betty Williams one heifer marked in the right ear & a crop & two slits on the left & a nick underneath. All the rest of my cattle to my wife with the before-mentioned plantation & lands.
"Wit. Gerrard Greenwood, Robert Sisson.
"Proved by Robert Sisson 2 May 1677 and by Gerrard Greenwood, aged 34 years or thereabouts, 6 June 1677. Page 7 [probably of Will Book]." [5]

Roger Williams died in Rappahannock Co. in 1677. His will, dated Feb.26, 1675/6 and probated June 6, 1677 mentions his sons Roger and Shadrack, his wife Joane, and his eldest daughter, Betty Williams. [6]

The widow, Joan Williams, married (2) Lewis Loyd, who died in Rappahannock Co. in 1690. The will of Lewis Loyd, dated April 24, 1687 and probated Nov. 5, 1690 (Sweeney, p. 137), leaves small bequests to his grandchild Ann Phillips, to "Henry Thornton's son Roger Thornton", and to Elizabeth Phillips; mentions his daughter-in-law, Ruth Williams; and leaves the bulk of his property to the widow, Joan. Joan Williams Loyd died in Richmond Co., Va. early in 1704.

The will of Joan Loyd, dated Jan. 8, 1703/4, and probated Feb. 2, 1703/4, mentions her daughter Susannah Phillips, wife of William Phillips; son Shadrack Williams; daughter Ann Debord wife of James Debord; daughter Ruth Canterbury, wife of John Canterbury; granddaughter Elizabeth Thornhill; daughter-in-law Elizabeth Williams; son-in-law, George Thompson; granddaughter Susan Phillips; grandson John McDaniell; son-in-law William Phillips; sons-in-law John Canterbury and George Thompson (Richmond Co. Wills, 1699-1709).

From Nancy Kiser: Will of Roger Williams recorded in Old Rappahannock County. "To my sons Roger Williams and Shadrack Williams I doe give 225 acres of land a piece...to wife Joane Williams I doe give the plantation with 200 acres of land...wherein she is at this present living. To eldest daughter Betty one heifer..." Witnesses: Gerrard Greenwood, Robert Sisson.

Roger Williams was a plaintiff in a suit in Northumberland Co,.VA in 1669 bequeathing to among other children. " My son, Shadrach Williams b. Feb 1, 1673 " My daughter Rebecca b. Jan 20, 1675 " My wife, Joane Frith.

Williams-1333 and Williams-105742 appear to represent the same person because: Same person, same parents, same daughter who is married to the same person.

I'm a bit confused about the relation to the listed parents. The Sydrack Williams and Anna Tiller this shows as the father and mother are supposed to have lived out their lives and died in England, with no indication that they were ever in the Colonies, yet Roger here was born in Virginia.

Williams-81192 and Williams-1333 do not represent the same person because: B.Hollis-1312 DNA confirmed as far back as Ruth "Williams" Canterbury (proven) ,daughter of Roger Williams-1333 & Joane "Jen" (Frith Firth). Son of Sydrack Williams & Anna (Tiler Tiller. This is the direct ancestry. Other merges show different names of relatives attached to Roger Williams making it confusing & hard to untangle. Please do research on persons of interest names people connected to person through investigating all fami;y connections & be careful when deleting a spouse namel

It has already been alluded to but the parents that are linked to Roger Williams were both born and died in England. How is it that they had a son born in Richmond, Virginia? It may be that these are not his parents or the birthplace for Roger is wrong. It is a question that should be resolved prior to merging.

Williams-81192 and Williams-1333 appear to represent the same person because: Williams-81192 and Williams-1333 represent the same person, I have removed the records in the research notes for Williams-81192 as they made no sense at all, I believe these profiles are now ready to be merged.

What's the source for both birth info (date and place) AND that he was son of Sydrach/Sidrach?

That he named one of his sons Sidrach is a clue, but if he WAS son of Sidrach, he was born not in Virginia, but in London. What concerns me is that there is no baptism record for Roger son of Sidrach in England, but there is for other children of Sidrach.

Williams-81192 and Williams-1333 do not represent the same person because: Williams-81192 Birth date (1616) & Birth place (Hertfordshire, Englamd) different from Williams-1333 Birth date (1625, 12-15) & Birth place (Richmond, Virginia) different & can not reconsile.

B. Hollis and others,

Please use Rejected Match for two profiles that are definitely not the same person. In this case, we should use Unmerged Match because we are fairly certain they represent the same person (same death info, same will), unless we can identify the presence of a separate Roger Williams in Virginia at the same time.

Thanks.

Williams-81192 and Williams-1333 do not represent the same person because: Williams-81192 shows birthplace Hertford, England and William-1333 shows Richmond County Virginia. Do not want to merge without solid documents to show birthplace.

Williams-1333 is listed as plaintiff in a suit in Northumberland Co VA in 1669. Is there any source for this info?

Williams-4306 and Williams-1333 appear to represent the same person because: When this merge is completed, you might want to take a look at the spouse(s), especially the Frith/Firth last name (clearly the same person).
