Biography

Roger Williams was born about 1645. He was the fifth son of Griffith Williams and Gwen Bodwrda.[1] [2]

He lived in London and is sometimes identified as Roger Williams of Fleet Street. He was a merchant tailor, also described as a woolen draper. He had a contract with the king to supply military uniforms, and he invented a scarlet dye for this purpose.[3] This included, specifically, uniforms for soldiers serving in the colony of Virginia.

Despite this lucrative business, Roger Williams and a business partner went bankrupt in 1689/90. This was due to bad loans made to family members and friends who could not repay them.[4]

In 1674, in Surrey, Roger Williams married Mary Curtis, daughter of Norton Curtis Esq. The parish register for Morden reads: 'Roger Williams of St. Bride, London, widower, and Mary Curtis, spinster, about 25, who consents - at Morden, Battersea or Lambeth, Co. Surrey, 15th June 1674.'[5], though the record elsewherere lists the date as the 25th.[6]

The children of Roger Williams and Mary Curtis Williams included:

  • Rev. Grifith Williams, 1675-1718
  • William Williams (abt.1677-aft.1719)
  • Mary Williams, 1679-
  • Ann Williams, 1681-
  • Gwen Williams, 1682-
  • Frances Williams, 1684-'John Williams, 1686-
  • Roger Williams, 1679- (there is some dispute about whether Roger was his father)

Roger Williams passed away in 1705.[7]
