Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Nathan Whitlow was a Virginia colonist.

Nathan Whitlow was probably born before 1735 based on the date of his marriage. He was the son of William Whitlow and Martha (____), and is named in William's Will.[1]

He married Diana Hicks on 7 September 1756 at St James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Colony of Virginia.[2]

In his Will, Samuel Hicks, Diana's father, lends 50 acres in Granville County, North Carolina, (see 3 February 1802 indenture below) to Nathaniel and Diana for their lifetime use with the land to go to their son Solomon upon their deaths. Samuel also bequeaths "a feather bed and all belongings thereto" to their daughter Nanny (Nancy).[3]

In 1802, Nathan and Dinah Whitlow and their son Solomon sell the land inherited from Dinah's father Samuel Hicks.

On 3 February 1802, an Indenture was made between Nathan Whitlow, wife Dinah Whitlow, and Solomon Whitlow, all of Granville County, North Carolina, and George Alsten of Granville County, North Carolina, for £21.0.0 Virginia currency, 50 acres, in Granville County, North Carolina, on the south side of Tabbs Creek, whereon Nathan Whitlow now lives and which was bequeathed to Nathan Whitlow and his wife Dinah Whitlow during their lifetimes by Samuel Hicks, deceased, in his last Will and Testament, and after the deaths of Nathan Whitlow and Dinah Whitlow to their son Solomon Whitlow, bounded as per said Will of Record in the aforesaid Granville County by a line from great branch to the back line, along the line to a corner pine, along the line to a black walnut upon the creek, up the creek to the great branches's mouth. Wit: J. Hamilton, Connor Parham. Ack: Nathan Whitlow, Dinah Whitlow, Solomon Whitlow. Ordered to be registered Granville County August Court 1802.[4]

I believe I understand why ‘aka Whitlock’ was added because Nathan’s surname was erroneously printed in ‘The Douglas Register’. I have to smile because there aren’t enough ‘also known as’ fields to cover all of the misinterpretations for the surname Whitlow. So far I have seen Whitlo, Whitloe, Whittle, Whitle, Whitly, Whitby, Whitley, Whitton, and Whitlock. And I am probably forgetting a few. There is one document that misspells the name three times in the same document. Maybe some couldn’t read or write, signing documents with their ‘X’ so the person writing out the documents guessed at the spelling. I suppose I have a minor concern that some folks will read this ‘aka Whitlock’ and believe that was his surname. I think I would add a sub-topic within the content to state all misinterpretations of the name instead.

He was Nathan ‘aka Nathaniel’ or perhaps Nathaniel ‘aka Nathan’ Whitlow.

Update Oct 17, 2022 - Place of death changed back to Granville County, North Carolina. It is reasonable to believe Nathan Whitlow died where he lived.

Please check sources before making changes to the place of death for Nathaniel Whitlow. He and his wife Diana had moved to Granville, North Carolina.

His son Pleasant Whitlow married Tabitha Tudor in 1786 in Granville, North Carolina.

His daughter Nancy Ann “Aggie” Whitlow married Cox Whitlow in Granville, NC in 1787.

His son Solomon Whitlow married Susanna Farrar in 1789 in Granville, North Carolina.

Nathaniel was on the 1784/1787 Granville, North Carolina census. It is reasonable to believe he died there around 1802.

1802, Nathaniel Whitlow deeded his Granville land to his son, Solomon. Note- Solomon m. 1st Susannah Farrar in Granville, then Mary --- who applied for widow's pension in Caswell, NC. Solomon had a son Solomon Jr. who resided in Caswell County.

Nathaniel is listed on the 1790 and 1800 Census for Granville, North Carolina.

3 February 1802, Granville County, North Carolina, deed book R: 39-40, Nathan Whitlow, wife Dianah, and Solomon Whitlow sold the fifty acres inherited from Samuel Hix to George Alsten.

Let’s change his place of death back to Granville, North Carolina please.

Added the 3 Feb 1802 indenture to the profile.

Is there a source for the 1802 deed from Nathaniel to his son Soloman?

Good morning Ken,

I sent you am PM after posting my earlier comment with details and mentioned I hadn’t found the 1802 deed. I searched some time ago and still haven’t located it. The claim that Nathaniel deeded his land in Granville, NC to his son was noted in a document on Archives.org but the source wasn’t given.

Samuel Hicks' Will says:

I lend to Nathaniel Whitlow and his Wife Diana the other part of the land viz from the great Branch [“mov” stricken through] up to the Back line from thence along the line to a corner Pine from thence [“to” stricken through] along the line to a black Wallnut upon the Creek from thence up the Creek to the great Branches mouth Upon Condition the[y] pay Quit rents if required.

It then says:

the land I lent to Nathaniel Whitlow I give and Bequaeth to his Son Sollomon after at the Deaceas of his sd Parents Nathaniel & Diana Whitlows

So the Will "lends" the land to Nathaniel and Diana, and "bequests" the land to son Solomon after their deaths.

I'm guessing that is why all three of them are then listed on the indenture selling the land to George Alsten, and that we won't find an 1802 deed from Nathaniel and Dinah to Solomon.

Yes, I considered that because of the wording in Samuel’s will. And you are probably right. I also wondered if Nathaniel had another separate tract that he gave to his son that wasn’t the land inherited from Samuel. I haven’t found any proof of it though. Just something to keep in mind in case we stumble across it someday.

About Nathaniel’s daughter Nancy...

I believe Whitlow-68, Nancy Hicks Whitlow and Agnes Whitlow-70 are the same person. This would mean Nathaniel had only the one daughter, not two. This makes sense, refer to the document named The Douglas Register’ that lists Nathaniel’s children. Online documents about nicknames indicate Agnes and Aggie as nicknames...

AGNES – FOR AGATHA OR NANCY AGGIE – FOR AGNES

Whitlow-61 and Whitlow-314 appear to represent the same person because: Major identifiers match and these profiles should be merged
