Obituary
Death of Mr. Robert Whinham. We deeply regret to have to record the death in the prime of life of Mr. Robert Whinham, the Principal of Whinham College, under painfully sad circumstances. As far as can be gathered from somewhat conflicting accounts, he was riding a few minutes after 1 o'clock on Friday afternoon, October 10, along King William-road, and when a little south of the Cathedral his horse bolted. Mr. Whinham kept his seat for some distance, but when near the Paou-Chung Factory the animal suddenly swerved and threw its rider violently against a telegraph-post, his head and upper part of his back coming in contact with the post. He was picked up and conveyed in a state of insensibility to his home at the College. On arrival there he momentarily recognised his mother and uttered a few words, but he speedily relapsed into complete unconsciousness, from which he never awakened. He died shortly before midnight on Friday, the cause of death being fracture of the skull. The deceased gentleman had a wide reputation throughout the colony, not only as one of our leading educationists, but as an elocutionist of high order. He aided Mr. John Whinham, his father, in building up what for many years was known as the North Adelaide Grammar School, but which now goes by the name of Whinham College, and on the retirement of his father a few years ago he assumed the active management of the establishment. Its high character has not suffered in his hands, for at the present moment it is acknowledged to be one of the largest and most successful private schools in Australia. Mr. Robert had a natural aptitude for teaching, and, following in the lines of his father, his great endeavour was to give the boys under his charge a thorough grounding in the elements of education. This reputation the College has always maintained, and no scholar from it has had much difficulty in securing a situation in the mercantile offices and banking Institutions of the city. The deceased's mother, who was a finished reader, taught him elocution, and few persons have done more for the cause of religion and charity than he has by means of his skill as an accomplished reciter. He was always ready to give his services, and on Wednesday, the 8th inst., he took part in an entertainment at Norton's Summit in aid of St. John's Church. He was much beloved by his boys, and frequently received interesting, little souvenirs of their esteem. When the news of his death was made known to the College boarders on Saturday morning there was not a dry eye amongst them.
