Loyd Wheaton' was an career Amercian soldier. Wheaton was a Brevet Colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War. For his gallant conduct at Fort Blakely, Alabama, Wheaton was awarded the Medal of Honor. Wheaton served as a Brigadier General during the Spanish-American War. During the Philippine-American War, Wheaton was brevetted Major General. At retirement, Wheaton was a Major General in the regular army.

Loyd Wheaton enlisted as a Sergeant in C0mpany E, 8th Regiment, Illinois Infantry on April 20, 1861, for a 3-month term. Wheaton mustered out on July 25, 1861, at the expiration of his term of service. [2][3] In July 1861, Wheaton was commissioned 1st Lieutenant in the 8th Regiment, Illinois Infantry. [4] In March 1862, Wheaton was promoted to Captain, in August 1863 promoted to Major and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in November 1864. In March 1865, Wheaten was brevetted Colonel for his service in the Mobile Campaign. [5]
On April 9, 1865, Wheaton's gallant conduct at the Battle of Fort Blakely, Alabama, would later earn him the Medal of Honor. [6][7]
On May 4, 1866, Colonel Wheaton mustered out of the Volunteers. [5]
After Wheaton mustered out of the Volunteers in 1866, he accepted a commission as Captain in the 34th Infantry Regiment. Wheaton became a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. [5] On September 1, 1869, Captain Wheaton was transferred to the 20th Infantry Regiment. On October 24, 1891, Wheaton was promoted to Major. In May 1895, Wheaton was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the 22nd Infantry Regiment. Lt. Colonel Wheaton transferred back to the 20th Infantry Regiment in September 1895.
When the Spanish-American War began, Wheaton was appointed Brigadier General in the Volunteers. General Wheaton commanded the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, VII Corps. General Wheaton was in Cuba after the fighting and his forces were there as part of the occupation. [8][5]
General Wheaton was sent to the Philippines to command Provisional Brigade, VIII Corps. General Wheaton led his brigade in the Pasig River Expedition, Malolos Campaign and at the Battle of Zapote River. General Wheaton then took command of 1st Brigade, U.S. 2nd Division, VIII Corps during the Northern Offensive. His forces won the Battle of San Jacinto. Then General Wheaton was placed in command 1st Brigade, 1st Division, VIII Corps during the second Cavite Expedition. General Wheaton commanded the Department of Northern Luzon during the second phase of the war. [8] On June 19, 1899, Wheaton was brevetted Major General in the Volunteers. [5] On June 18, 1900 Wheaton was promoted to Major General in the Volunteers. [8][5]
Wheaton was commissioned Brigadier General in the regular army, with rank from February 2, 1901. On February 28, 1901, Wheaton was discharged from the Volunteers. On March 30, 1901, Wheaton was promoted to Major General in the regular army. [5]
On 15, 1902, after 41 years of service, Major General Wheaton retired. [5]
Major General Loyd Wheaton, Retired, passed away in 1918. He was buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Rockford, Illinois. [1]
