Biography

Sampson was born in about 1805 in South Carolina. He is understood to be the son of Sampson Vickery, Sr. and Charity Robins. Sampson appears to have first married in South Carolina. The name of his first wife is unknown. Sampson married Elizabeth Spradley on the 21st of March, likely in 1847. ^[1] In 1850 Sampson and Elizabeth are enumerated on the federal census in Yalobusha County, Mississippi. ^[2]

Research Notes

This profile previously asserted that following a marriage to an unidentified woman in South Carolina, Sampson next married Rebecca Fox in Yalobusha County, Mississippi, likely in the late 1830s and that Rebecca died sometime prior to Sampson's marriage to Elizabeth Spradley. While a Sampson Vickery did marry a Rebecca Fox in Yalobusha County, Mississippi, it was not this one. Rather Rebecca (Fox) Vickery (1828-1880) married Sampson Whitney Vickery (1826-bef.1920). The date of the marriage is somewhat difficult to ascertain because it was recorded in Yalobusha County, Mississippi Marriages Volume A, which was lost. Volume A recorded marriages in Yalobusha County, between the county's formation in 1833 and about 1846. While the book itself was lost an index remains and therefore there is a page number for each marriage. The marriage of Samson Vickery and Rebecca Fox is recorded on page 165, which happens to be the last page in Volume A. As such it is assumed that Rebecca and Sampson Vickery married in 1846. In 1850, Rebecca Fox Vickery is still very much alive with her husband Sampson in Arkansas.

Volume B, which exists is labeled as recording marriages between 1847 and 1869. Indeed, the present Sampson's marriage to Elizabeth Spradley is the first marriage recorded in Volume B.
