George Varner Sr. was born in Appalachia, in Pennsylvania. See Appalachia Project.
"George Varner was born in Pennsylvania or Maryland in about 1755 He moved to Rowan Co, NC, with his parents, probably during his early childhood years. He fought with American forces during the Revolutionary War. He moved to Wilkes Co, GA, soon after the end of that war. He became a prosperous planter, acquiring extensive holdings of land and Negro slaves. He died in Oglethorpe, GA in 1827. George and his wife Elizabeth "Betsy" , raised a large family. Their children moved to other communities in Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana."[1]
George is believed to be the brother or cousin of Frederick Varner because his plantation in Oglethorpe, Georgia adjoined that of Frederick.[1]

Research Notes
No definitive records have been found to prove the identity of George's father. George is often associated with Adam Varner or his brother John Varner based upon the fact that George settled very near one of John's known sons, Matthew Varner, and one of John's suspected sons, Frederick Varner.
