Biography

I was born February 18, 1942 in Carthage Township, Athens County, Ohio, the youngest of eight children born to Hartsel Foster and Dorcas Garnet Lott Windland. I attended 8 years of school at the Lottridge Elementary School in Carthage Township, and 4 years of high school at Coolville in Troy Township, graduating in 1960. Following graduation, I accepted employment with Nationwide Insurance in Columbus, Ohio, where I was employed until May 1962. I married Harry Leland Parker on March 10, 1962 at the Alfred Methodist Church in Alfred, Meigs County, Ohio. We welcomed 7 children to our family. Leland died on December 11, 2004 and is buried in the Meigs Memory Gardens Cemetery, near Chester, Ohio. In January 1975, I joined the Meigs County Historical Society and spent almost 41 years as a volunteer at the Meigs County Museum; 40 years as a board trustee and 31 years as president of the society, retiring from all in December 2015. I was a founding member of the Meigs County Genealogical Society (1980) and have served as Treasurer for most of these years. I was a part-time employee of the Meigs County Ohio State University Extension Service from 1989 until I retired in January 2010. I have always been interested in genealogy and began collecting family information as a teenager. When some of our children were old enough to take Genealogy in 4-H, we traveled to locations in Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland in search of records and other proof of lineage. With accessible records now on the internet, I have been able to tie up some of the lineage we had not been able to establish. I have done genealogical research for others since the late 1970's (mostly Meigs County, Ohio), and I also continue to add to mine and my late husband's family research.

Margaret --

You are now a confirmed member, and you can get started adding your family members. As we've said, WikiTree is quite different from other genealogy sites. So, we've put together a guided tour to help you learn how to use it. Your first stop is How to Start Climbing Our Tree.

Tomorrow, you'll hear from a Mentor who will check in to see how you're doing and answer any questions you might have.

Next week, you'll get another message with your next stop on the guided tour.

You can also meet some of our members by joining in the fun with our Question of the Week in the G2G forum: What is your most memorable genealogical discovery?

Welcome!

Shirley

Hello Margaret, welcome to WikiTree!

The email we just sent has helpful links to get you started.

WikiTree is different because our goal is to have one profile per person, and that means we share ancestors and work together as a BIG collaborative team!

What brings you to WikiTree? Do you have research you’d like to share? Are you interested in how your family fits into the big tree?

When you confirm your email address, you’ll be given an opportunity to volunteer to help document our collective family history. Use the Tags and comments to tell us about your genealogical interests.

When you volunteer, one of our Greeters will confirm your membership. Then you'll be able to add your family to the tree!

We're really glad you're here!

Shirley
