Henry was born in 1788. He was the son of William Vane and Katherine Powlett. He was baptised on 13 September 1788 at St. James's, Westminster, London, England. He married Lady Sophia Poulett, daughter of John Poulett, 4th Earl Poulett and Sophia Pocock, on 18 November 1809 at St. George's Church, St. George Street, Hanover Square, London, England. He died on 18 January 1864 at age 75 at Raby Castle, Durham, County Durham, England, suddenly, without issue. His will was proved on 3 March 1864, at under £800,000.[1]
He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, on 21 April 1806.[2]
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for County Durham between 1812 and 1815. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Winchelsea between 1816 and 1818 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Tregony between 1818 and 1826. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Totness between 1826 and 1830. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Saltash between 1830 and 1831. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for South Shropshire between 1832 and 1842.[3]
He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1824 in the service of the 75th Foot. He gained the rank of Major-General in 1851. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1857. He gained the rank of General in 1863[4]
He was styled as Viscount Barnard in 1830. He was styled as Earl of Darlington in 1831. He succeeded to the title of 6th Baron Barnard of Barnard's Castle, in the Bishopric of Durham [E., 1698] on 29 January 1842. He succeeded to the title of 4th Earl of Darlington, co. Durham [G.B., 1754] on 29 January 1842. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Marquess of Cleveland [U.K., 1827] on 29 January 1842. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Raby of Raby Castle, co. Durham [U.K., 1833] on 29 January 1842. He succeeded to the title of 4th Viscount Barnard of Barnard's Castle [G.B., 1754] on 29 January 1842. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Duke of Cleveland [U.K., 1833] on 29 January 1842. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) on 11 April 1842.[5]
