Biography

Rahel (van Dyk) Nussbaum has Jewish Roots.
Rahel (van Dyk) Nussbaum died as a result of persecution during the Holocaust.

Rahel van Dyk was born on 14 March 1873 in Bunde, Leer district, Province Hannover, Preußen, German Empire,[1] daughter of Samuel Salomon Van Dijk and Flora Isaac Ries.[2]

Rahel married Philipp Nussbaum van Dyk on 30 May 1900 in Bünde.[1]

They had two sons:[1]

  1. Justus Nussbaum (born 1 March 1901)
  2. Felix Nussbaum (born in 11 December 1904)

who were raised in Osnabrück, where the family was residing at Schloßstraße 11 and Kleine Hamkenstraße 4.[1]

In Osnabrück, her husband became the co-owner of the iron trading company "Gossels u. Co." in Osnabrück, together with Simon Gossels.[1]

Philipp and Rahel Nussbaum travelled to Switzerland in 1933 as retirees and onwards to Italy, but returned to Cologne in 1935.[1] Post the 1938-Programnacht, they emigrated to Amsterdam.

The city archive of Amsterdam contains a record listing the couple's address in Amsterdam as of:[3]

  • 16 May 1939: ASD Roerstr 15 I
  • 1 December 1939: Opgen(omen) in B R
  • 18 April 1940: Legmeerstr 60 hs
  • 29 August 1942: PB 11524
  • 14 September 1943: Afrikanenplein 40hs
  • 15 December 1943: WESTERBORK Lager.

It would appear that the Nazi occupational forces or the local authorities tracked the couple's location only to deport them to the Polizeiliche Judendurchgangslager Westerbork, i.e. Westerbork transit camp, which was one of two Nazi transit camps in the occupied Netherlands, and located in the province of Drenthe in the northeastern part of the country.

Several parts of the document are blackened. Also, the Amsterdam Judenrat kept a record of Rahel Nussbaum van Dijk with her name, birth date and residency at Legmeerstr. 60 h(ui)s and Afrikanerplein with the red note "Tr 8.2.44"., suggesting a transportation date of 8 February 1944.[4][5]

From Westerbork Rahel and her husband were deported to Auschwitz on 8 February 1944 with 1013[6] other people, where they were killed on 11 February 1944.[1]

Both sons were also killed in Nazi extermination camps.
