Lucretia is one of my brickwall ancestors. No record has been found of her birth or her death. Based on census records, her birth has been estimated around 1795. Her death is "after" 1880, since she is last seen in the 1880 census.
Lucretia (Unknown) Blackwell was born about 1795 in South Carolina, United States.
Lucretia married John Blackwell (~1780 - 1835). Based on the birth of their first child in 1815, I am estimating they were married around 1814.
Unknown child - there was an unidentified child in 1840 census
Lucretia's husband died in 1835, and she and her children can be found in his estate papers, and newspaper notices regarding his estate.[1][2][3]
In the 1840 census Lucretia was in Edgefield, South Carolina, United States.[4]

In the 1860 census Lucretia (age 65) was in Edgefield District, Edgefield, South Carolina, United States. She was living with her son Samuel and his family.
Also in the household, is her son John's son by his first wife, James Pressley Blackwell. Lucretia and James have a close connection through her life which leads to the belief she became like a mother to him after his own mother died.[5]
In the 1870 census Lucretia (age 76) was in Plum Branch Township, Edgefield, South Carolina, United States. She was living with her son in law Elias Robertson. He had been married to her daughter Mary Ann who died around 1855.[6]
In the 1880 census Leucretia (age 85) was the widowed grandmother of J. Presley Blackwell in Plum Branch Township, Edgefield, South Carolina, United States. This was the last record found of Lucretia.[7]
Since Lucretia was last recorded in the 1880 census, her death has been marked as "after 1880" in South Carolina aged >85.
Slaves
After the death of her husband in 1835, she is found in a legal record showing the transfer of slaves to her as a new owner. Her husband owned two properties, and she was listed as Lucretia Blackwell in the record for the slaves associated with her home farm, and Widow Blackwell in the record for slaves associated with the plantation. The accounting of her husband's estate shows the location of the slaves.[8][9]
Transfer of New Slaves from the home farm to Lucretia Blackwell
Looking for her maiden name, I have entertained the surnames numerous possibilities. I've searched through old wills and probate records hoping to see a mention of a daughter named Lucretia. I have found none to date.
Wright - name of one of her grandsons
Pressley - middle name of a grandson
Freeman - family seen in many wills and records associated with Blackwells
Price - associated family
Searles - associated family
Jennings - associated family
Tucker - family seen in many wills and record associated with Blackwells
So far, I have been unable to locate Lucretia in the 1850 census.
