Biography

Catherine Ulrich was born September 5, 1828, daughter of Peter Ulrich and Catherine (Bowser) Ulrich, likely in Maryland but possibly in York County, Pennsylvania.

Catherine's siblings were Sarah (1820), Michael (1822), Benjamin (1827), Samuel (1830), Joanna (1832), Amanda (1838) and Lavina.

In 1840, Peter Ulrich is listed as head of household with one male 40-49 (father Peter age 45), one female 40-49 (mother Catherine age 43), one male 15-19 (brother Michael age 18), one female 15-19 (sister Sarah age 20?), two males 10-14 (brothers Benjamin age 13 and Samuel age 10), one female 10-14 (Catherine age 12), one female 5-9 (sister Joanna age 8) and one female under 5 (sister Amanda age 2) in Nimishillen Township, Stark County, Ohio [image 13/24].

Catherine married James Smalley, son of Isaac and Priscilla (Scott) Smalley on March 19, 1848 in Wyandot County, Ohio.

Catherine and James were the parents of Amanda (1849), John Watson (1852), Catherine (1855), James Scott (1860), Dencie A (1865) and Harriet Iva (1866).

In 1850, James Smalley is listed as head of household age 27 with his wife Catherine age 22 and their daughter Amanda age 1 in Crane Township, Wyandot County, Ohio.

In 1860, James Smalley is listed as head of household age 37 with his wife Catherine age 32 and their children Amanda age 11, John age 8, Catherine age 5 and Scott age 0 in Crane Township, Wyandot County, Ohio.

In 1870, James Smalley is listed as head of household age 47 with his wife Catherine age 40 and their children John age 17, Manda age 20, Catherine age 14, James Scott age 10, Nancy A age 6 and Iva age 4.

Catherine died on February 14, 1879 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Crane Township, Wyandot County, Ohio.
