Biography

John Harris Tyner was born about 1696 in Carolina Colony. [1] He is the son of Sarah Tyner and John Harris, who were not married to one another.

John is the grandson of Nicholas Tyner.

John Harris Tyner married Sarah Adair who was born in 1710 in South Carolina, and died in March 1779 at Wilkes, Elbert, Georgia.[citation needed]

He had at least five children: [1]

  • John Tyner (bet 1735-1738 – 1780)
  • Richard Tyner (bet 1735-1740 – 1824)
  • Harris Tyner (1740 – abt 1778)
  • Caleb Tyner (abt 1744)
  • William Tyner

John Harris Tyner, legatee of John Harris, gave in 1759 by deed of gift to his son John Tyner the 235 or 245 acres he owned in Chowan County.[citation needed] By this time his family were in Johnston County. John Tyner sold off the remainder of this Chowan land in 1764.[citation needed] In 1767 Haris Tyner Sr. was referred to in Johnston Court Minutes as an "aged person," incapable of business.[citation needed] He must have died soon after this. Richard disappeared from Johnston records then, and Harris was in South Carolina by 1770. John remained in Johnston and left a will there in 1780, naming children Jesse and John Tyner and Millie Hood. Jessee Tyner left a will in Johnston County in 1818.[citation needed]

John Harris Tyner died in 1767 in Johnson County, North Carolina. John Harris Tyner was mentioned on a memorial.[1]

In July 1767, Harris Tyner appeared on a jury list in Chowan County, North Carolina.[2]

"Jul 1767 Ordered that HARRIS TYNER SR be recommended as a poor aged person incapable of performing public duties & paying taxes."[3]

Tyner-135 and Tyner-28 appear to represent the same person because: They are one and the same except for minor name issues.
I’d almost wager that John Harris’ “William” was William Richard and his second name wasn’t noted as a youngster. His birth date is in the ballpark, and he named, as enumerated in his will, a son Harris. They moved from Johnston County, NC, as did I, to points further south, Abbeville, SC, then to Elbert County, GA for those Tyners. Richard is apparently in a reconstructed 1790 GA census also.

Maurice, please clarify which persons (by profile ID) you're referring to here.

John Harris-3805's will (dated 16 Dec 1711) made bequests to the children of Sarah Tyner (and others have concluded these were his biological children: Harris Tyner-28 [this profile here], William Tyner-44 and Sarah Tyner-45.

Documents (citations missing) from the time of Harris Tyner-28 [this profile] name only one son John Tyner-15. I've posted a comment below asking for sources for a) the marriage to Sarah Adair and b) the other children.

(NOTE: As of this date (5 Mar 2024), there is a duplicate of THIS profile at Tyner-135.)

Can we get sources that confirm that John and his wife Sarah were parents of the children currently attached here?

If you look at the will of John Harris you will see that he and Sarah had three children. They took the name of Tyner because Sarah was the mistress of John Harris. After John’s wife Mildred and Sarah passed away the remainder of his will went to Sarah’s children. Their names are John Harris Tyner, Sarah Tyner, and William Tyner. If you look at Nicholas Tyner Sr’s will you can see by what he left her showed his displeasure at the way she lived her life. I am a direct descendant of Nicholas Tyner Sr.

Thanks, Jimmy, but I'm not asking about the children of John Harris and Sarah Tyner, but about the children attached to Harris Tyner (this profile) and Sarah Adair.

Are you speaking about this profile: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/GXJT-HB8

It cites the will of John Harris, not of John Harris Tyner. I don't see a will for John Harris Tyner. And the Find-a-Grave link there goes to someone entirely different.

If John Harris Tyner had a will, it would be great to see it.

Harris-47671 and Tyner-28 appear to represent the same person because: These are the correct profiles that should be merged. From what Jimmy wrote me, I believe that John used his mother's maiden name Tyner, not his father's, Harris. That means that the final profile should be Tyner-28.

Jimmy wrote me this in a private message:

John Harris Tyner, the son of Sarah Tyner and John Harris, who were not married to one another, was born in 1696 in Carolina and died in 1767 in Johnson County, North Carolina. John Harris Tyner married Sarah Adair who was born in 1710 in South Carolina, and died in March 1779 at Wilkes, Elbert, Georgia. Based on this message, I have made changes to this profile.

I made a mistake about John Harris’s birth date and place of death. John Harris Tyner was the son of John Harris and Sarah Tyner who were never married. Thomas’s parents were Thomas Harris 2nd and Ann Martin. Sarah’s parents were Nicholas Tyner and Margaret Oliver. I am so sorry for any inconvenience or problems this has caused. I am still learning wikitree and it’s tree format. This merge should not be made. Jimmy Lewis

Are you saying that the information you entered on the profile of John Harris-47671 is not correct? (Born in 1663, died in 1766 and married Sarah Tyner?) If it is wrong, would you please make the necessary changes to his profile, to make it clear that he's is different person.
