Biography

John Turrill (birth registered as Turrell) was born in 1846 at Great Milton in Oxfordshire. He was the son of Richard Turrell and his wife Ann, born Ann Gibbins. [1]

1851 census: John Turrill was living at Great Milton with his parents, Richard and Ann, and their other children. His age was given as 3, implying a birth date in 1847 or 1848. His birthplace was given as Great Milton, Oxfordshire. [2]

John Turrill (bachelor), a butcher, of Great Milton, son of Richard Turrill, farmer; and Ann Maria Bennett (spinster), of Great Milton, daughter of William Bennett, mason; were married at Great Milton parish church on 25 April 1872. The witnesses were called John Bennett and Emma Bennett. [3]

1881 census: John Turrill was living at the butcher's shop in Great Milton with his wife Annie M. and their children, William, Annie, and John. His age was given as 34, implying a birth date in 1846 or 1847. His birthplace was given as Great Milton, Oxfordshire. He was a butcher. [4]

1891 census: John was living at Great Milton with his wife and their 3 children. His age was given as 44, implying a birth date in 1846 or 1847. His birthplace was given as G[reat] Milton, Oxfordshire. He was a butcher, employing others. [5]

John Turrill died at his home at Great Milton on 7 September 1902. [7] [8]

After his death he was noted for his interest in local affairs, service on the parish council, and serving as treasurer of the Great Milton Friendly Society, until ill-health forced his resignation. He took an active part in organising the local Jubilee celebration in 1897. The bier carrying his body was drawn to the churchyard by his old favourite brown pony; the bearers were all members of the Friendly Society. [9]
