Biography

John Turrill (birth registered as Turrell) was born in 1846 at Great Milton in Oxfordshire. He was the son of Richard Turrell and his wife Ann, born Ann Gibbins. ^[1]

John Turrill (bachelor), a butcher, of Great Milton, son of Richard Turrill, farmer; and Ann Maria Bennett (spinster), of Great Milton, daughter of William Bennett, mason; were married at Great Milton parish church on 25 April 1872. The witnesses were called John Bennett and Emma Bennett. ^[3]

After his death he was noted for his interest in local affairs, service on the parish council, and serving as treasurer of the Great Milton Friendly Society, until ill-health forced his resignation. He took an active part in organising the local Jubilee celebration in 1897. The bier carrying his body was drawn to the churchyard by his old favourite brown pony; the bearers were all members of the Friendly Society. ^[9]
