Arthur Belzoni Turrell was born in Brussels, around the time that the Kingdom of Belgium was declared independent of the Netherlands. It is uncertain therefore whether he was born in the Netherlands or in Belgium. Since the independent Kingdom of Belgium was not actually recognised for a further 9 years, we will take his place of birth to be the Netherlands. He was the son of Lieutenant Charles Turrell and Anne Wallace.
In the census of 1841, when Arthur was 11 years old, he was living with his older brother Henry Stein Turrell and his wife and infant son in Surrey. Their father was living in Rye lane, Peckham, Surrey, with Arthur's brother's Charles and Frederick. Their mother was in France with their sister Frances.
Arthur was educated at Brighton. He married Henrietta Harriett Emily Caulfield on 16th July 1851 at St Giles in Camberwell, Surrey, England. [1] They migrated to Australia, and in 1859 , aged 29, Arthur applied for a teaching position with the National Board of Education in Sydney. [2] Arthur is known to have taught French in Sydney.
In 1861, he was living in Duke St, Balmain in Sydney.
Arthur married Elizabeth Poole in 1874 when he was 44 years old. He and Henrietta must have been divorced, because she passed away in 1887, which was 13 years after he married Elizabeth. After Henrietta died,Elizabeth became stepmother to his children.
Arthur taught modern languages, most likely French, at Bathurst High School in New South Wales. His services as a language teacher were terminated in January 1885, as the class sizes were too small. He was kept on in some other capacity and failed to be promoted over the remaining 17 years of his career. He retired on 13th April 1901, aged [3]
Arthur died on 13th September 1905 in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia aged 75. [4] [5]
His wife's obituary follows with reference to Arthur:
The many friends of the Turrell family will read with regret of the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Turrell, mother of Messrs. Ernest and Sydney Turrell, which took place on Monday at the residence of her nephew, Mr. S. Poole, Marrickville. Deceased was in her 98th year, and the widow of the late Mr. Arthur Belzoni Turrell, who died at Bathurst 24 years ago. Her remains were interred in the Church of England cemetery, Rookwood yesterday. There are many men in Bathurst well advanced in years who were taught by the late Mr. A. B. Turrell when he was the French master at the Rev. Dr. Savinly's school in George Street, now the residence of Dr. Barton. Upon the opening of All Saints' College, the school went out of existence, and Mr. Turrell entered the Education Department, and there are many living to-day at Glanmire and Yetholme who owe to him their education when he was the master of the Green Swamp Public School.
