Lafayette Townes was born 24 Jul 1830 in Amelia, Virginia. This date of birth is recorded in the family Bible records of the Townes family (see media). He was the son of Armistead Townes and Elizabeth Giles. He is named in his father's 1855 will.^[1]

He married Virginia Thomas 17 Mar 1859 in Marshall County, Mississippi.^[2]
