Biography

Colonel George Townes served in the Virginia Army in the War of 1812
Service started: Aug 29, 1813

George was born in 1791. He was the son of Halcott Townes and Sarah Coleman.[1] He passed away in 1861. He married Eliza Barker Tunstall 10 Aug 1819 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. [2]

He served as Captain in the War of 1812 and later became Colonel of Militia. [3][4]

He served in the House of Delegates 1818-1819 and 1848-1853, in the Senate of Virginia 1829 and on the Virginia Constitutional Convention in 1829.[5] He was on a Select Committee created by the House to consider the University of Virginia Commissioners Report for establishment of the University of Virginia.[6]
