Biography

1776 Project
Lieutenant John Townes Jr served with Virginia Line during the American Revolution.

John was born in 1761, probably in New Kent, Virginia. He is the son of John Townes Sr and Martha Allen. His father appears in New Kent vestry records through 1773.

Military Service as Lieutenant Virginia Militia. [1]

Biography from Find A Grave:[2]

He married Elizabeth Leigh, the daughter of John Leigh and Elizabeth Greenhill, 21 Jun 1782, Prince Edward, Virginia. They were parents of the following:

  1. John Leigh Townes
  2. Elizabeth Terrell Townes Leigh (married John Townes Leigh 1786-1850)
  3. Ann Leigh Townes Leigh (married William Leigh 1790-1873)
  4. Paschal Leigh Townes (married Mary Harwood Overton 1800-1830 and Lucy Finney Walker 1803-1866).

John's name appears in the index of "Virginia Militia in the Revolutionary War - McAllister's Data" (J. T. McAllister, 1913, Hathitrust.org) on page 334 as "Townes, John Jr., 252." However, the actual entry on page 179 (Section 252, Amelia County) appears as "Towers, John, Jr., En., S. May 25, 1780". There are no other Townes listed as Militia for Amelia County in this source.

John Townes, Jr. was the son of John Townes, Sr. and Martha Allen, and his name is represented this way on various and sundry Amelia County records throughout his life. There were various John Townes in Amelia County through the years, and they were most likely related in some way; however, the fact that his name appears with the attached "Jr." assures me who he is.

At is death he was buried at the Foot of Leigh Mountain, Farmville, Prince Edward County, Virginia.
