Research Notes

Identity

From the one available source (probate record), it appears this profile is intended to be William Took (Tooke?), son of James Tooke (abt.1600-bef.1662). The Will listed in that James Tooke's profile is also dated 1 February 1659, and also refers to a 800 acre tract in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.

Charles Lucas MD shared some research that was archived by Rootsweb but it is being swallowed by Ancestry April 2023 so what might be helpful is placed here to aid in further research.[4]

From: VA genealogies pre 1607-1776 "Capt. Barham was married prior to Feb. 2, 1666/7 to Elizabeth ..........  (Surry D. & W. 1645 -71, p. 342). Her maiden name is uncertain, but she  was probably from isle of Wight Co. and h er name may have been Ridley.  At any rate, the best clue we have to her origin is in the wil l of  William Ridley of Isle of Wight co., dated May 1, 1671 and probated Oct.  19, 1671 (I. o f W. D. & W. No. 2, p. 98). after appointing Mr. Charles  Barham his executor the testator makes bequests of household articles to  his daughter-in-law, JANE TUKE, wife of WILLIAM TUKE of Surry Co.,;  directs that the rest of his household goods be divided between Elizabeth  and M ary Prime, daughters of Edmund Prime; that his clothing be shared  between Edmund Prime and WI LLIAM TUKE, his wife's son-in-law; mentions  Mrs. TUKE's "four children" and Edmund Prime's "five children"; leaves  bequests to Mary, daughter of John Crew, and to Mr. Barham's two  daughers, Elizabeth and Perilee; and finally leaves his plantation to Mr.  Barham till the lease is up "to keep and breed up John the son of Edmund  Prime." it is a pity that no relationship s are mentioned in the will,  but the Prime children were the principal legatees, indicatin g a close  relationship to William Ridley. The following data regarding the  individuals mentio ned in the will show relationship to the Barhams.  1--JANE TOOKE, Ridley's step-daughter, was the wife of WILLIAM TOOKE ofSurry Co., WILLIAM TOOKE was born in 1626 (D. & W. 1672-84, p , 18) and was the son of JAMES TOOKE of Isle of Wight Co., who represented that county in the House of Burgesses. WILLIAM TOOKE died in Surry in 1675, leaving his property to his wife JEANE, and his son and daughter JOHN and REBECCA (id. p. 98) MRS. TOOKE was a Quaker and she m . (2) another Quaker John Barnes of Surry Co. His will, dated Mar. 2, 1690/1 and  probated in Surry June 1, 1691 (D. & W. 1686-93, p. 202) mentions "my  kinsman Robert Barham ye sonne o f Charles Barham"; an the principal  legatees were his "son" JOHN TOOKE, and his wife JANE, and his daughters  Sarah And Susannah. After John Barnes' death, his wife m. (3) Thomas  Bowman , who died about 1695. Her will, as "Jeane Bowman," dated Oct. 1, 1702 and probated in Surr y Mar. 4, 1706, mentions her daughters Jean  Newby and Elizabeth Ezell; son JOHN TOOKE, sone-i n-law Michael Ezell and  his son William; grandson WILLIAM TOOKE; granddaughter Sarah New by ;  daughter Sarah Cornwell; and daughter Susannah Barnes, executrix;  witnesses. William and Susannah Price.

Thomas Carter in 1667/8 bought a sloop from William Tooke in Isle of  Wight County, Virginia.   (The Carters of Virginia by Noel Currer-Briggs, published 1979,  Phillimore, England, page 28.)   William Tooke was the younger son of James, the immigrant, and was born in James City or Mulberry Island, Virginia in 1626. On 29 November 1672, he testified that his age was 46. Shortly after his father's death he  removed to Surry County, Virginia where he died in 1675, a year after he  was shown as a tithable. He was also on the tax list of 1668.   In 1662, William Tooke was a member of a coroner's jury to examine and to run his hands over the corpse of a deceased servant to assure that a blow had not caused the death.

William Tooke deposed 29 November 1672 that he was aged 46.  (Adventurers of Purse and Person, (1987) page 624).

On 12 December 1672, a group of men including William Tooke assembled at  Lawne's Creek Parish Church opposing the amount of public taxes. A  warrant was issued for these seditious men to appear before two justices  but the case was disposed of 06 January 1673/4.  This was the beginning of the Colonists dissatisfaction with the English  oppression and was the forerunner of Bacon's Rebellion.   Captain William Canfield patented 550 acres in Surry County on 24 January  1656 for the transportation of 11 persons among whom were Joane Gurney,  Joane Davis, and Timothy Issall. Captain Canfield paid for each of these  passengers and collected 50 acres for each as a headright.   William Tooke's wife Joan may have been Joan Gurney or Joane Davis who  came over with Timothy Issall. Timothy Issall's son Michael married  Elizabeth daughter of William and Joan Tooke.   William Tooke sold 900 acres of land in the Isle of Wight County,  Virginia on 03 January 1661. He was designated as the 'sone and heir'  James Tooke. This land was patented by James Tooke 11 November 1640.   Upon the death of William Tooke in 1675, 'foure howers before his  departure out of this mortal life', He made his noncupative will as  follows:   I give and bequeath unto Jane Tooke my wife my whole estate goods...  nominate her my whole exec., paying unto Jno and rebecka Tooke my sonne and daughter one mare foale.   Proved by the oaths of Joseph Vinson, and Mary Williams in court and upon the record in folio 98 of this book.   Recorded: 08 February 1675   (From Your Inheritance, Vol. 1 by Robbie Lee Gillis Ross, 1972, page 29.)

Mack-1127 It is recorded that William Tooke, of Wapping, Middlesex served on the Amity under Mr. John Tully, making a voyage to Virginia in 1654. At that time, he was 30 years old. They dropped off a fellow mariner, William Sutton, to recover from an illness at the home of William's father, said to be William but could easily be a scribal error intended to be James. William was a deponant in the case of Elizabeth Sutton v John Tully, 7 to 10 December 1658. William's wife at that time was 29 year old Hester Tooke. She testified that in June of that year, the Amity discharged the tobacco which her husband had loaded at Virginia on behalf of Elizabveth Sutton but she refused to come for it. She was the widow of the deceased that the testimony related to.[5]

If it is accepted that the father was named James, immigrant to Virginia, rather than named William, the next problem to address is is being of Wapping, Middlesex. He clearly was doing business in Virginia but is it reasonable that he held residence in England? The fact that his wife offered testimony, seems to support residence in Virginia, where his father and Elizabeth Sutton lived. It is reasonalbe to assume William married before the marriage to Jane or Joane.

Tooke-534 and Tooke-39 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, birth (VA), and death. Birth county can be resolved from parents and siblings locations at the time.

Protected Profile of James Tooke-376. Please add James Tooke-376 as father to William Tooke-39.

William Tooke was originally linked to a father Richard Tooke. The later lineage of this profile is correct. Ancestry is not.
