Samuel graduated Harvard University in 1710. He was hired by the selectmen of Gloucester, Massachusetts, in December, 1712, to keep school for three months and preach in the village of Annisquam. He was then renewed for one year. He was liked by the village and further qualified for the ministry by receiving a second degree in 1713. When the second parish was organized it called Mr. Tompson to the ministry.[1]
Marriage
On November 26, 1716, eight weeks after Samuel was called to the ministry, he married at Gloucester, Hannah Norwood ("Mrs. Hannah Norwood" in the town record).[1][5]
Ordination
On November 28, 1716, two days after his marriage, Samuel was ordained in Gloucester and became pastor of Gloucester Second Church.[1]
Death & Burial
Rev. Samuel Tompson died in Gloucester, Massachusetts, on December 8, 1724, "aged 33 years" (Gravestone). He was eulogized in a contemporaneous newspaper obituary as follows: "He was of a pleasant aspect and mien; of a sweet temper; inoffensive in his whole behaviour; pious and peaceable in his conversation; his ministerial gifts superior, and his fidelity, diligence, and success answerable; orthodox in his faith, and a fast Mend to the constitution of these churches. And, as he preached, so he lived and died in the faith."[1][6][7][8][9]
"The inventory of his estate amounted to £416. 2s., of which his books were appraised at £22. 78s 6d. The parish paid Mrs. Tompson her husband's salary to the close of his year, and generously voted £30 in bills of credit to pay his debts. She probably soon removed from town with her family, as none of them are again mentioned here."[8]
