Wangaratta Chronicle: "FATAL ACCIDENT AT GRETA. FELL UNDER THE WAGGON WHEEL.[2]

Mr John Henry TANNER jun., a married man, farmer, of Greta South, was killed on the roadway about a quarter of a mile from his home at 7 o'clock on Tuesday night, through his falling beneath a waggon and the wheel going over his head. The accident happened in the simplest manner possible. In the morning Mr Daniel M TANNER (cousin of the unfortunate man who was killed) left his father's home, driving a four-horse waggon, to go into Glenrowan. Mr John Henry TANNER left his home about the same time also to go into Glenrowan. He was on horseback. At Glenrowan they put 2 1/2 tons of manure on the waggon, and afterwards left for home. John TANNER tied his horse on behind the waggon and rode on top of the load with his cousin. When they got as far as Mrs HART's, John got off the waggon, and mounting his horse rode into Mrs HART's. He again overtook his cousin near Mr LLOYD's, and dismounting tied his horse to the waggon. As it was cold they walked along the road for a while, and then Daniel TANNER got up on the load again, leaving James (sic) walking at the side. As they came to where a tree had fallen along the road, Daniel drove the waggon to one side of it, while James (sic) walked around the other side of the tree. As they passed the tree, and James (sic) was coming across to the waggon he put his foot in a hole, tripped and fell, his head just reaching on a level with the rear wheel of the waggon, which passed over it, crushing the head. Death was instantaneous. Daniel did not see his cousin fall, but his attention was arrested by a crunching noise, and he pulled up immediately, to find on looking over the side that James (sic) had fallen under the wheel of the waggon. Word was at once sent to Constable BOLTON, of Glenrowan, who rode out and examined the body and spot, and afterwards reported to the Coroner, who gave an order for the burial. Intense sorrow is expressed for the relatives of the deceased, who was well and favourably known throughout the Greta district, of which place he was a native. Deceased was 35 years of age, and a married man. He leaves a wife (daughter of Mr James O'BRIEN, of Greta), and four children - the eldest being a boy of 10 and the youngest a girl of 3 years - for whom deep sympathy is felt. He was a brother of Messrs Charles, Edward, Daniel, Henry, and Misses Ellen, Catherine, Louisa and Lillie TANNER, of Greta. In place of a day of sorrow, the family were looking forward to a day of rejoicing on the Wednesday, as a sister of deceased was to have been married that day, and all preparations had been made.
Painful circumstances in connection with this accident are that Mr John WATSON, who was killed by being thrown from a vehicle on the Greta-Glenrowan road about six weeks ago, was an uncle of deceased, while Mr James WATSON, who was killed through being caught in a belt at the Hanson Butter Factory a month ago, was a cousin.
The funeral took place on Thursday, the remains being interred in the Greta Cemetery. The Rev Father BYRNE read the burial service. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Mr T LAIDLER."
