Communication Preferences: I am interested in communicating private message with anyone who shares the same genealogical or historical interests. Here is my family tree.
My mother’s family (Stevenson/Grant/Fairbairn/Sutherland) trace back to Scotland in the 19thC, and I’m researching earlier generations as I can manage.

My father’s family (Tankard/Purton/Robson/Jackson) were mostly Anglo-Irish, and I’m finding them all over the UK, with the odd generation passing through Tasmania on the way to New Zealand.

Happy to help overseas genealogists access records held in New Zealand.

Hi Kerry,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Hi Neill,

I’m a re-tread, my account was deactivated by mistake & I’m hunting down all the profiles I built that became ‘orphans’. It’s going to take a while to re-connect the whole thing, but I’m learning to use features I wasn’t familiar with before :)

Cheers, Kerry

Hi Kerry,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

The England Project may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Have questions? Ask in the comments section of my profile.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles that you manage or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

I had the great pleasure to go to New Zealand a few years ago my favourite place was Queenstown I have always been into anything being driven by steam(being related to Richard Trevithick I guess) and to go on the steamer on the lake was magic

Hi Kerry,

This is a courtesy e-mail to see how things are going. Are you enjoying WikiTree so far?

Have the tips in the New Member How-Tos been helpful? Please do let me know if you have any questions about how WikiTree works, no matter how small. My rule of thumb when I started was to search for an answer for five minutes, then reach out to my Greeters, and then resume searching. I might have found the answer before they got back with me but they sometimes offered a different way of doing the same thing which was easier.

Thanks for adopting the Orphaned Profiles. This After Adopting Orphans FAQ explains the special attention those profiles need. Let me know if you have questions on how to find and record sources, merge duplicates, clean up gedcom biographies, or interpret the Suggestions report.

I'm here to help! You can reply to this comment or send me a private message.

Hi Debi,

Slow corner, had a big day offline yesterday, going through boxes of stuff from my mother’s house, with my sister.

Most of what I’m doing here is organising family history records that I already had on paper, then adding digital sources as I find them. WikiTree is the most useful tool for doing this - I’ve been an in situ researcher in libraries & archives for decades, so finding a good digital tool has been very inspiring.

The collaborative nature of the Wiki community has helped me to make connections between bits of info that I had gathered (from conversations with family members over decades) which had been ‘orphaned’ themselves, so to speak. A lot of the profiles I have picked up are ones I have discovered while inputting known family members - people who are spouses or children that had already been input by someone else, but abandoned.

Thanks again for your considerate check-ins. I am sure I will hit some brick walls eventually, but for now I’m having a lot of fun joining the dots on information I already had in hand.

Cheers, Kerry

Apologies for the 2nd email, but I forgot to mention....

For the record - you are also a second cousin once removed to Christine Allan-Johns. She is an anglican minister and lives in Christchurch, I believe. She is also descended from Andrew Fairbairn. The once removed means that you are 3rd cousins to her 2 sons and she is a 2nd cousin to your mother. You can find her with this ID - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Allan-Johns-1

The only other Fairbairn cousin I know of outside of my immediate family is my 3rd cousin Margaret stewart - but since she is descended from Andrews brother Thomas, just like I am - which means Margaret would also be a 4th cousin to you. Just confirmed that with the relationship finder and yes, she too is your 4th cousin. Her ID is this - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stewart-22600

I dont have too many cousins from the Fairbairn side of my family here on Wikitree, so I am very happy that you are here.

Cheers

Robynne Lozier

Looks like Christine hasn’t visited since 2015 - there’s a comment on her profile from admins trying to make contact.

Do you have any contact with her? They’re saying her account will be closed...

Hi Cousin Kerry!!

You and I are most definitely related through the Fairbain and Mackie lines - but very distantly. So glad you found us here at Wikitree. And thank you for adding in the rest of your tree!!

The relationship finder here at Wikitree says we are 4th cousins!!

I have added some details to Andrew Mackie's profile - in that I posted the names of Andrew Mackie and Ann Abbie's parents (see the comments) but I have no sources for those details. I think I was given those details back in the 1990s before I moved to Canada.

Cheers

Hi Kerry

I am pleased to welcome you as a member of the WikiTree family. Your contributions will go a long way to joining the world’s trees together.

I would suggest starting with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Please add as much information as you can, with sources, as it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

Have fun collaborating on your ancestors

Hi Wendy,

It’s taken me a week or so to get familiar with the layout of WikiTree - and I’m discovering new resources regularly. Many people have generously given me tips & how-to’s.

The question that I’m considering is about the DNA tests that are so frequently a topic in various threads.

Little old New Zealand doesn’t have much exposure to this stuff (there are labs here, but they are mostly concerned with testing for known genetic dysfunctions that manifest in heritable diseases, and require a referral from a medical specialist.), and I really don’t know what the difference between the tests discussed here are, nor whether there are more or less accurate/reliable tests.

Is there a topic page somewhere that clarifies info about the tests currently available?

Cheers, Kerry.

Hi Kerry

This page may help to explain different types of DNA tests https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:DNA_Tests

I did mine with Ancestry. The test results have helped me discover new branches of my tree.

Historian academically, family history research for love, since my mid-teens.

Enjoying using online tools to organise the information I have gathered over decades of rummaging through archives & repositories in New Zealand.
