Johann Michael Schwab was born on 24 Feb 1725 in Germany, son of Johann George Schwab (1682 - 1782) and Anna Maria (Keydel) Schwab (~1702 - 1782),who immigrated with their children to Lancaster Pennsylvania, in 1727. [1]
He became Justice of the orphans court in York County, PA. Note: This may be in error. Check sources (Entrikin-5 07:15, 19 December 2023 (UTC)) Michael Swope married twice. His first wife is probably Anna Maria (Spengler) Swope (1725-) (sources needed to verify) He married 2nd in 1763 to Eva Barbara Kuhn in Yorktown,York.
He organized and led the 1st (York) Regiment of the Pennsylvania Flying Camp, which was captured at Fourt Washington early in the Revolutionary War. According to Benjamin Franklin, his estranged son, the Loyalist Governor of New Jersey, was traded for Col. Swope in a prisoner exchange with the British, one for one.
His luxurious York home was loaned to John Hancock when the Continental Congress fled Philadelphia, PA.
Michael Swope moved to Alexandria Virginia after the Revolution, where he owned a wharf and chandlery and built the townhouse still standing at 210 Prince Street. He deeded his business and residence to his sons in 1786 and thereafter appears only in the records of the Alexandria dead-letter office. DAR records claim he died in 1792, but no local records confirm the place or date of his death.
His remains were transported to Philadelphia, PA for burial in family crypt, in downtown Philadelphia, which was cleared in the mid 1800s, with all remains moves to another cemetery on what was then the outskirts of Philadelphia.[3]

Hi, Cathy, I completed the merge, I am not sure why I missed the merge approval request, but 'tis finished. There is still a bit of tidying to do on the bio, but I'll work on it. I am going to add him to the Palatine Migration Project. He qualifies!
