Elias Sunstein died 30 Nov 1971 at his home, 5506 Aylesboro Ave., Squirrel Hill, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, United States, and was buried in West View Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA.
Elias did not know what his actual given name was. His birth certificate simply said, "male Sunstein", and he was always called Lazzie in his youth. He was called Sunny at Princeton. He adopted the name Elias, though his name could have been Lazarus or Eleazar, as well.[2]
Their family lived in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania.
In 1920, Elias and Gertrude lived on Aylesboro Avenue in Pittsburgh, with their daughter Ann, sons Richard and David, and two servants. Elias' age was listed as 35, and his occupation as attorney in general practice.[9]
In 1930 Elias and his family still lived on Aylesboro Avenue. With the addition of their youngest daughter, they now had four children. The household also included a lodger and two servants. Elias was listed as age 46; age 26 at marriage; an attorney in general practice.[10]
In 1940, still on Aylesboro Avenue, the household consisted of Elias, Gertrude, their three younger children, and two lodgers who probably worked for the family. Elias was 56, an attorney in private practice.[11]
Eli attended Kiskiminitas Prep School. He graduated Princeton University in 1906 where he was Phi Beta Kappa and had the highest marks in the government department. He studied daily with Woodrow Wilson (also studying there at the time was Norman Thomas). Eli tutored poorer students in the department. He was captain of the tennis team that won the national intercollegiate doubles championship. He lated attended Pittsburgh University Law School and practiced law briefly[13] but said he was not polished at getting clients so shifted to investment advisor for the remainder of his life, chiefly for Alexander Speyer.
Eli's chief interests where his family, reading, and sports (in that order). He played tennis into his seventies. He loved Shakespeare. He often quoted Ancient Mariner about He prayeth who loveth best all things both great and small. He also liked to say that, If God was like man, then god of an elephant would be like an elephant.
Eli's ideal of was to be of sound mind in a sound body. He gave the children in his life the advice to pick a mate who could stand the gaff or take the bumps in life; I did.
Eli died at age 88 in Pittsburgh. His best friend was his brother, Leon. His favorite painting was Leonardo's Virgin of the Rocks.
