Biography

Johannes Sturm was born 26 Jan 1723 to Christian Sturm and his wife Anna Barbara, née Gah of Schifferstadt, Bishopric of Speyer (now in the Rhein-Pfalz-District of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany). The entry says:

[1723] On January 26th was born, and baptized on the 31st Johannes, son of Christian Sturm and his wife Anna Barbara, née Gah, of Schifferstadt. Godparents were: Johannes, the son of Philipp Henrich Rupp; and the maiden Catharina Elisabeth {...page torn...}." [1]

His family name later is sometimes given as "Storm" due to a local dialectic shift in pronunciation. This often happens, when people move into another region, where the name is not commonly known and written down only from hearing.

Marriage: He married 18 Apr 1747 in Plankstadt Anna Barbara Gund of Plankstadt. The entry reads:

[1747] Den 18. Aprilis: Johannes Sturm, gebürthig von Klein-Schiferstatt, bischofl. Speyerischer Jurisdiction, ledigen Standtes; und Anna Barbara, Valentin Gunthn, bürgerl. Einwohners und KirchenEltesten dahier, ehel. ledige Tochter; beyde Ref. Religion. [2]
Translation: "On April 18th 1747 got married: the bachelor Johannes Sturm, born in Klein-Schifferstadt, under the dominion of the Bischop in Speyer; and the maiden Anna Barbara, legitimate daughter of Valentin Gund, citizen and church elderman here; both of Reformed confession."

The family lived in Plankstadt. The following children are known:

  1. Leonhard Sturm; born 1748 in Plankstadt;
  2. Elisabetha Sturm; borm 1752 in Plankstadt;
  3. Anna Catharina Sturm; born 1755 in Plankstadt;
  4. Johann Martin Sturm; born 1758 in Plankstadt; died young 1761 in Plankstadt.
  5. Johannes Sturm; born 1761 in Plankstadt; died young 1768 in Plankstadt.
  6. Johann Peter Sturm; born 1764 in Plankstadt; died young 1764 in Plankstadt.
  7. Maria Eva Sturm; born 1768 in Plankstadt;

His wife died 1775 in Plankstadt at the age of only 48 years. [3]

Death: He died 1788 in Plankstadt, the entry reads: "On December 18th 1788 died, and was buried on the 19th: Johannes Storm, about 65 years old." [4]

Research Notes

This person is often conflated with a Palatine Emigrant, Johannes (Sturm) Storm (1723-bef.1805) whi ended up in Maryland, as can be seen in many online trees, for example at this Ancestry-Profile. However, THIS person here has NOTHING to do with the emigrant.

Sturm-992 and Sturm-642 are not ready to be merged because: Hello, K -- thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I'm afraid that I continue to feel muddled. Your message says The Johannes that you made a comment on {that is, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sturm-642} was born and died in Plankstadt. However if you look at that person's data fields, it has other information there, born in Klein Schifferstadt. Should the birth location field be fixed to Plankstadt?

America comes into play because Johannes (John) Sturm or Storm's will was dated 10 January 1805 and signed in MARYLAND. So we have https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sturm-642 and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sturm-992 -- full brothers with the same name, both were born and died on the same dates but not in the same place.

These two books listed as sources for Sturm-642. I assume Wesch's book is the one you described in your message. Should Frei's book be deleted as a source for this profile? Frei, Kurt. Familien in Sandhausen 1694-1899. Frankfurt/Main, Germany: Zentralstelle für Personen- und Zeitgeschichte, 1990. Familien in Plankstadt 1650-1910 Author: Lothar Wesch I have been trying to find an on-line copy of Wesch's book to see where his death date of 10 Jan 1805 in Plankstadt comes from, but it is a recent (and expensive) publication, and as far as I can tell I have to go to Salt Lake City to see FamilySearch's copy. I will try the Palatinate message board to see if anyone can do a look up for Johannes Sturm for us.

With the same parents and the same dates, I think these two profiles need to be merged, but until we determine what's going on with the place of death, I will mark it as an Unmerged Match. Maybe the man who died in Maryland needs to be detached from the family, but the same date of death raises questions that I would like to investigate.

Sturm-992 and Sturm-642 appear to represent the same person because: These should definitely be merged. 642 has very limited sources to back anything up (difficult to even consider them sources) and the identical birth and death as well as name would be highly unlikely they be different. The limited sources with lack of description is highly questionable.

Sturm-992 and Sturm-642 are not ready to be merged because: I have set Sturm-992 and Sturm-642 as an unmerged match for now, but I think it may end up as a rejected match. I know the name and dates are the same and the same parents are shown, but I think these are two different people and one of them has been incorrectly attached to this family.

Sturm-992 married Maria Elisabeth and apparently arrived in America in 1749 (https://archive.org/details/pennsylvaniagerm03penn_2/page/414/mode/2up?q=storm) whereas Sturm-642 married Anna Barbara in Germany and they had a daughter Maria Eva in Plankstadt in 1768. Ancestry has records for Maria Eva's birth as well as her marriage to Michael Schmidt in Germany in 1786.

Maybe someone with better knowledge of German records could determine which man belongs with this family and which man should be detached.

Hey Dave, I had a quick look into this problem and improved the profile of the GERMAN part of this conflation problem, as can be seen here on Sturm-642 Johannes Sturm (1723-1788).

Since I am not deeply involved into the matter I leave the disconnection and untanglement of the other one to the rest of you. However, I would recomment the disconnection of the Palatine migrant, since the parents and siblings given here, seem to belong to the German fellow (at least the most of them), maybe the whole family is a wild mixture of several people. Has to be handled with care !!

Thanks Danny for your extensive work on this family. But it looks to me, especially given how many of the children of Christian and Anna Barbara ended up in America, that the 'German' Johannes is more likely to be attached to the wrong family than the immigrant.

No. The "German" Johannes is clearly belonging to the family here. He was born in Schifferstadt and there was only one possibility that fits this family in Reformed and Catholic books. Also his age at death fits. He is the son of Christian Sturm. I also could verify nearly all children of Christian, as the siblings of Johannes. So this family is secure. My guess from what I've learned is that there was e merge around 2015 which mixed up things. It seems to have doubled the Johannes and also added some other unsourced children to Christian, also adding "Johann Sr." as other names to Christian, who otherwise in ALL the sources is only referred to as "Christian", so I quess we have a mixture of two familys here. I put all verified children of Christian Sturm (abt.1662-1734) on his profile. Not belonging are Christian Sturm (1698-); Eva Apollonia Sturm (1705-) and the mystical Johannes (Sturm) Storm (1723-bef.1805), who is said to have emigrated. These three would have to be removed.

Some of the "German" Johannes' siblings did indeed emigrate. So I guess this is the reason for this conflation in the first place. But Johannes definitely stayd home. The other Johannes however might have been a relative, who followed later.

Definitely wrong is the given birthdate and place for the "Emigrant" Johannes, since there is only one Johannes born in Schifferstadt, and thats the one who married and moved to Plankstadt, where he died.

We would have to expand the research to the whole Sturm family in the area and follow the sidelines to solve this puzzle, IF he is a relative at all. Sturm is a quite common name in Germany, so we by far are not limited to this family alone. There might be other possibilities. See here: https://nvk.genealogy.net/map/1890:Sturm

Appreciate all you've done here Danny. But I'm still unclear how you concluded that the man who ended up in Plankstadt is the correct one. Maybe I'm missing something obvious but I don't see any evidence that directly connects him to Schifferstadt.

Hello -- I am unsure if this is a duplicate of Johannes (Sturm) Storm (1723-bef.1805) or if this could be a profile that is an amalgam of different individuals named Johann Sturm.

-- the dates entered into the date fields match Sturm-992. But the biography section gives a 1744 birth date.

-- the location entered into the death location does not match. There doesn't seem to be a source for Plankstadt as a death place?? The date matches up with Sturm-992's will that was signed in Frederick, Maryland.

-- the source for this profile is located in Sandhausen, I don't know if this is a source for his birth or another life event. It's close to Plankstadt, both towns are across the Rhine and about 30-40 km from Iggelheim, where Christian and Anna Barbara's son was baptized.

We may need to merge the two profiles. Or this may be an unconnected person, born in Sandhausen in 1744. Let me know what you think.
