Biography

Alberta "Mae" was born in 1881 in Salt Creek Twsp, Monroe Co,Indiana to John Oscar Stipp Jr and Sarah Lucretia Horner. She attended Bloomington High School. Mae received her formal education at the University of Indiana. She married Claude Clawson Sr. in 1906. In 1911 they had their first child Claude Jr. They moved to Southern California in 1912. On 6 Dec 1912 Grandma and Grandpa Stipp arrived at the Clawson home in San Bernardino. The Stipp's returned home June 6th and Grandpa dropped dead uptown on the street 8 Aug 1913. July 1915 the Clawson family moved to Oakland, CA. Mae was a grammar school teacher in the Oakland School District. Mae received her Life Diploma from the State of California on 1 Dec 1930, authorizing her to teach any elementary or junior high school in the state. Claude and Mae had their second child John in 1921. December 1922 Grandma Jemima and Grandpa Clawson came to visit and stayed until April 1923. She later wrote in her son's baby book that her father was walking down the street and dropped dead. In 1929 Alice Stephenson, Mae sister came to live with them. Mae and Claude entertained many people in their home taking in family members and boarders. They were a very happy couple. Mae met her demise while making breakfast for her husband Claude Sr. She was cooking at the stove when she had a aneurism and passed away at 220 John St, Oakland, CA, 1950.
