Biography

Alice was born in 1904. She was the daughter of Albert Stielow and Amelia Lampole. Her father died when she was a child. When Alice was older she began working in a factory. At age 20 she married John Francis Kerr who was 25. They had two daughters, Shirley and Reta. In 1931 they were struggling during the Depression. Her husband was a house plaster and there wasn't much interest in building or repairing houses. John Kerr earned $350 in 1930 according to the census. Fortunately Alice's sister Florence was living with the family and had a good job with the Ottawa Citizen Newspaper, earning $1,040 in 1930. Alice died in 1959 (*) "Kerr, Alice--Suddenly at Arnprior. Wednesday, December 2, 1959. Alice Stielow wife of John F. Kerr, of 83 Ida St. mother of Shirley Kerr, Reg.N., of Ottawa, Mrs. Gerald Hogan (Rita)."

While I don't have a memory of Alice, I do remember when she died. My mother Evelyn (Stielow) Miller was Alice's cousin. I was home from school when Mom received a telegram and I remember her collapsing in a chair and sobbing. I had never seen my mother cry like that and was wanting, at age eight to comfort her. She must have been very close to Alice.
