Biography

Dorothy Stepney, daughter of Alban Stepney by his 2nd wife Mary Philipps, married Sir Francis Mansell, 1st Bt., of Muddlescombe, co. Carmarthen. ^[1]

—The Carmarthenshire Mansels seated at Trimsaran and Motlyscwm, or Muddlescombe, were cadet branches of Oxwich and Margam Abbey, being derived respectively from Anthony, third son, and Francis Mansel, of Trimsaran, fourth son of Sir Edward (son of Sir Rice Mansel and his second wife, Cecil Dabridgecourt), of Margam Abbey, in county Glamorgan, and the Lady Jane his wife, daughter of Henry Somerset, Earl of Worcester—and thus younger brother by full blood to Sir Thomas Mansel, of Margam, the father of Sir Lewis Mansel, of Margam. The said Francis Mansel, the fourth son, became seated at Muddlescombe, near Cydweli, or Kidwelly, county Carmarthen, through his marriage with Catherine Morgan, heiress of that estate, whose ancestors were a cadet branch of Morgan, of Longston and Penycoed, county Monmouth, the Tredegar sept.

By this marriage the said Francis of Muddlescombe left issue four sons : (1) Sir Walter, (2) Sir Anthony, (3) Dr. Francis Mansel, Principal of Jesus College, Oxford, (4) Richard, who became seated at Iscoed through marriage with Katherine Morgan, the heiress of Rees Morgan, Esq., of the same family as that of Muddlescombe. This Richard, on failure of the elder brother's lines, succeeded to the old Baronetcy of Mansel of Muddlescombe, from whom descended the late Sir John Wm. Bell Mansel, Bart. After the death of his first wife the aforesaid Francis Mansel, of Muddlescombe, married Dorothy, daughter of Allan Stepney, Esq., of Prendergast, county Pembroke. The eldest son of this second marriage, viz., John Mansel, Esq., married Mary, daughter of Sir Henry Vaughan, of Dervvydd, a branch of Golden Grove, county Carmarthen (see the line of the old Earls of Carbery, extinct), and their son, Henry Mansel, married his kinswoman, Frances, daughter and heiress to Sir John Stepney, of Prender¬ gast, second Bart., and by her became progenitor to the Mansels of Trimsaran and Stradey, Barts., extinct. P.S.—The issue of Anthony Mansel, the first mentioned, at Trimsaran, brother of Francis, appear to have soon died out in the male line.
